The men's FIVB World Tour 2010 consisted of 14 beach volleyball tournaments, six of which were held as a Grand Slam and the other eight as an Open .
Tournaments
Brasília Open (April 20th to 25th)
As in the previous year, the men's tour started in April 2010 in the capital of Brazil . In the Country_Quota could Kaczmarek / Schneider their German competitors Böckermann / Urbatzka off, then they failed in the first qualifying round. Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik were seeded for the main draw, but lost their first two games. Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif fared better , who won two games after their opening defeat and finished 13th in the overall ranking. The reigning world champions Brink / Reckermann finished seventh after they had to admit defeat in the loser round to the Olympic champions Rogers / Dalhausser , who won the first final of the year against the Brazilians Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti . The bronze medal went to Benjamin and Bruno after their victory over their Brazilian compatriots Cunha and Thiago.
Shanghai Open (May 3rd to 8th)
In the qualification, Dollinger / Windscheif and Erdmann / Matysik, who had previously defeated Böckermann and Urbatzka in the country quota, prevailed, but neither of the qualified teams could achieve a victory in the main round. David Klemperer and Eric Koreng, however, fought for seventh place. Brink and Reckermann, who reached the final after victories over the Spaniards Herrera and Gavira as well as the Brazilians Emanuel and Alison, were even stronger, but lost to their compatriots Pedro and Harley there. Third place went to the South Americans, who lost to the Germans, while the US Olympic champions had to be content with fourth place.
Foro Italico Beach Volley Grand Slam in Rome (May 18th to 23rd)
After successfully qualifying, Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik also survived the group games and the subsequent first main round at the first Grand Prix of the season, only failing in the second round to the eventual winners Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser. For Klemperer / Koreng, the quarter-finals were the final destination of this tournament after losing to the later finalists Alison and Emanuel. Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann finished fourth after the Spaniards Herrera and Gavira were too strong for the two Germans that day in the small final.
After three victories in qualification, Mischa Urbatzka and Marcus Popp said goodbye to the Polish Open with two main round defeats. The other German teams started the tournament with wins. Dollinger and Windscheif finished 17th in the table, Klemperer / Koreng landed ten places ahead. Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann were able to take revenge for the lost semifinals in Rome after their defeat against Rogers / Dalhausser, who subsequently also won the final against Herrera and Gavira. In the game for third place, the Germans defeated their former conquerors Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego and secured the bronze medal.
Grand Slam in Moscow (June 8th to 14th)
Erdmann and Matysik survived the qualification after a successful country quota against Kaczmarek / Schneider, but could not win a group game in their preliminary group. With their only win in this group against their German rivals, Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif stayed in the competition and reached the quarter-finals with two more games they won. They failed there just like their compatriots Brink / Reckermann a lap later to the Olympic champions Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser. The Americans lost to the Chinese Wu and Xu in the final, before the German world champions had secured the bronze medal through a success over Casey Jennings and Bradley Keenan.
Patria Direct Open in Prague (June 15-20)
Since there were only four German beach couples in the Czech Republic, Erdmann / Matysik and Böckermann / Urbatzka were able to start directly in the qualification, which neither team survived. David Klemperer and Eric Koreng finished 17th after one win and two defeats. Things went better for Brink / Reckermann before they failed again in the semifinals this season against the Olympic champions. For the third time this year, the final was Rogers / Dalhausser against Emanuel / Alison and for the third time the Americans won the gold medal, the Germans took bronze for the third time in a row by beating the Chinese winners from Moscow
Grand Slam in Stavanger June 29th to July 4th
Since Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann sustained serious knee injuries in Prague, only four German teams competed. Erdmann / Matysik survived the qualification, won two games in their preliminary group and were only eliminated in the second round after another victory. The tournament went just as well for Marcus Popp and Mischa Urbatzka. The victories in the qualification were followed by three successes in the group stage, u. a. against Windscheif / Dollinger, who were eliminated without a win, and against the number two seeded Brazilians Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti. Popp and Urbatzka thus moved directly into the round of 16, but lost there against the later silver medalists Skarlund and Spinnangr. David Klemperer and Eric Koreng finished undefeated in the Grand Slam in Norway, thus securing their first ever World Tour success. In the semifinals they had defeated Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, who were able to prevail against the Spaniards Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira in the game for third place.
In the country quota, Böckermann and Urbatzka defeated Kaczmarek and Schneider, but were eliminated in the first qualifying round. Erdmann / Matysik took 17th place after winning the group stage. A 'questionable mode' according to www.beach-volleyball.de brought Stefan Windscheif and Sebastian Dollinger the end. Although they were better than both opponents in terms of set ratio and better than one opponent in terms of ball quotient, they ended up in fourth and last place in their preliminary group. Eric Koreng and David Klemperer, who then fought their way to the final, benefited from this arrangement. There, however, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers managed to take revenge for the final defeat in Stavanger. Third place went to the former world champions Márcio Araújo and Ricardo Santos , who defeated the Poles Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel in the small final.
World Series 13 Marseille (July 20th to 25th)
Nils Rohde and Stefan Köhler failed in the qualification, which Mischa Urbatzka and Markus Böckermann survived unscathed, but there was no victory for the two Germans in the main round. With one game each, Stefan Windscheif and Sebastian Dollinger as well as Jonathan Erdmann and his interim partner Marcus Popp and six other teams achieved 17th place. After several top-seeded teams did not start and the Spaniards Herrera / Gavira only finished ninth as number one in this tournament, the way was clear for the Chinese Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu to their second gold medal of the year. Second were the Latvians Plavins and Smedins, the bronze medal went to the fourth from Gstaad, Fijalek / Prudel, who defeated the Austrians Gosch and Horst in the game for third place.
Grand Slam in Klagenfurt (July 27th to August 1st)
Stefan Schneider and Thomas Kaczmarek won the German country quota against Markus Böckermann and Mischa Urbatzka, but then failed in the first qualifying round. In the main round, Dollinger / Windscheif said goodbye to the Grand Slam in Klagenfurt without a win, while Eric Koreng and David Klemperer defeated the Austrians Gosch and Horst, but after they had the best ball quotient of three teams with equal points, they came second in the group for the Germans On the other hand, the loss in a direct comparison against Lochhead / Pitman meant the end, although the New Zealanders had the lower ball quotient and both teams were tied. Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik were the only German duo to reach the next round, but after a 2-0 win against the Kazakhs Sidorenko and Dyachenko they lost their next game against Alison / Emanuel, who together with their compatriots Ricardo / Araujo and Fuerbringer / Lucena as well as Rodgers / Dalhausser reached the semi-finals. Both US duos prevailed, the final won the top-seeded Olympic champions and thus secured their sixth gold medal in 2010. The bronze medal was won by Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego.
Mazuri Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki (3rd to 8th August 2010)
Sebastian Dollinger and Marcus Popp prevailed in the country quota against Böckermann / Urbatzka, but lost in the first qualifying round. While Erdmann / Matysik did not survive the pool round, the two top German duos Brink / Reckermann and Klemperer / Koreng reached the round of the last four. The reigning world champions won the German-German semifinals. The tournament winners were once again the Americans Rogers / Dalhausser, who had defeated Marcio Araujo and Ricardo Santos in the other semifinals. The Brazilians won the game for third place against David Klemperer and Eric Koreng.
Kristiansand Open (August 10-15, 2010)
The top European teams were not at the start in Norway, as the European Beach Volleyball Championships were taking place in Berlin at the same time . Köhler / Rohde failed in the second round of qualification, Popp / Götz and Böckermann / Urbatzka lost their first two main round games and were eliminated early. Three Brazilian teams reached the semi-finals, with Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser winning the tournament for the eighth time this season. They defeated Marcio Araujo and Ricardo in the semifinals and then Harley and Pedro, who had reached the final for the second time in 2010. The bronze medal went to Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego.
Åland Open (17th to 22nd August 2010)
The penultimate men's tournament of the year took place in Mariehamn . The three German participating teams were qualified for the main field. Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann won their first game, but lost the two following matches, which meant 17th place in the final accounts. Mischa Urbatzka and Markus Böckermann came 13th after winning and losing two games. The best German couple in Finland were Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif. The two beach volleyball players of Hamburger SV only lost against the Chinese Wu / Xu (seed list no. 4) and against the Latvians Plavins and Smedins, who were listed at number six. In contrast, there were four wins. The seventh place shared with the Brazilians Benjamin and Bruno meant the second-best position of the year up to that point. In the semifinals, Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser prevailed against the Spaniards Herrera / Gavira, also won the subsequent final against Marcio Araujo and Ricardo, albeit very close in the third set with 15:13, and thus won a World for the ninth time Tournament this year. Wu and Xu, who lost to the Brazilians in the other semifinals, secured the bronze medal.
The Hague Open (August 24-29, 2010)
In the absence of the previously established Tour Champions Rogers / Dalhausser, the two strongest Brazilian teams and the German elite, who were gathered at the national championships on Timmendorfer Strand , an Australian, a Danish, a Norwegian, a Dutch, an Italian and a won Brazilian duo made it into the round of the top eight, plus two US couples. The up to then undefeated Benjamin / Bruno and Jennings / Wong met in the final, in which the number 21 seeded Americans prevailed. Her top-ranked compatriots Fuerbringer / Lucena secured the bronze medal after beating the top-ranked team from the host country Boersma / Spijkers. At the last men's tournament of the year, the Danes Hoyer / Soderberg and the Italians Ingrosso / Martino finished fifth, the Norwegians Skarlund / Spinnangr and the Australians Boehm / Kapa took seventh place.
