Career beach volleyball
Born in Berlin, Matysik played for the first time in 2001 with Karl Strempel at the World Tour tournament in his hometown. In 2003 and 2004 further participations followed in Berlin with Thomas Kröger . The Kröger / Matysik team played primarily the German tour, with their greatest success being the victory at the Masters in Burg auf Fehmarn . In 2005, Matysik formed a new duo with Marcus Popp for just one season. Matysik / Popp achieved a tournament victory in Cagliari , two Masters successes in Essen and Dresden and third place in the German championship in Timmendorfer Strand . The following year, Matysik and his new partner Eric Koreng took 13th place at the European Championships . The same result was achieved with Stefan Uhmann at the 2007 European Championship , plus three national tournament victories in Erfurt , Fehmarn and Munich . In the final of the German championship they had to admit defeat to Brink / Christoph Dieckmann's team. In 2008 Matysik / Uhmann became the first male team to win three consecutive times at the CEV Tour. At the end of the season, they took first place in the European ranking. They also reached the final of the European Championship . Matysik's partner for the 2009 season was initially Christoph Dieckmann . After Dieckmann had to end his career in June 2009 due to knee problems, Matysik formed a new duo with Jonathan Erdmann .
Erdmann / Matysik took part in the 2009 World Cup in Stavanger , but dropped out as third in the group after the preliminary round. In the same year they played their first Grand Slams and came fourth in the German championship . In 2010 they reached ninth place in Rome, Stavanger and Klagenfurt . At the 2011 World Cup in Stavanger , they lost their first round match against their German rivals Klemperer / Koreng , but still managed to win the group; in the round of 16 they were eliminated with a 1: 2 against the Latvians Pļaviņš / Šmēdiņš . On the World Tour they then managed a series of three ninth places and a fourth place in Stare Jabłonki . They were even more successful at the European Championships in Kristiansand . There they defeated three Dutch duos after a group stage without losing a set in the knockout phase, before losing to Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann in the purely German final . The following year, however, they had to admit defeat to the Dutch Boersma / Spijkers in the second round of the European Championship in Scheveningen . On the World Tour 2012 they finished fifth six times. They also qualified for the London Olympics . After they had reached the round of 16 via the lucky loser round of the group third, they were eliminated against the later finalists Emanuel / Alison . A month later they became German champions in Timmendorfer Strand by beating Koreng / Walkenhorst in the final . In 2013 they finished fifth at the Grand Slam in Rome. At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki they made it to the semi-finals without losing a set. After losing to Brouwer / Meeuwsen from the Netherlands , they secured the bronze medal with a win against Alison / Emanuel. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt , they reached fifth place. In August 2013, Matysik was voted Germany's beach volleyball player of the year . Because of a shoulder injury, he could not defend his German championship title. In 2014 Erdmann / Matysik had numerous top ten placements at the FIVB Grand Slams and won the national Smart Super Cups in Binz and Kühlungsborn . At the European Championships in Cagliari , they finished ninth. In August, Matysik was again voted Germany's beach volleyball player of the year. At the German championship , Erdmann / Matysik won the title again with a tie-break victory against Fuchs / Kaczmarek . Erdmann / Matysik finished ninth at the 2015 World Cup in the Netherlands . In August 2015, Matysik was voted Germany's beach volleyball player of the year for the third time in a row. After failing to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Kay Matysik and Jonathan Erdmann split. Then Matysik played with Alexander Walkenhorst and took third place in the German championship . In 2017 Matysik played again with his former partner Marcus Popp on the national Smart Beach Tour .
