FIVB World Tour 1989/90

The FIVB World Tour 1989/90 was the first beach volleyball series of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball and consisted of three tournaments. The first FIVB Tour Champions were Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith .

Tournaments

Jesi

The Italian Open took place from July 25-30, 1989. Twenty beach couples were at the start. The majority came from the host country with seven pairs, with the United States and Brazil providing three pairs each. The remaining participants came from Austria , Hungary , France , Russia , Canada , Argentina and Japan .

The winners were the Americans Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos. The silver medal went to the Italians Giovanni Errichiello and Dio Lequaglie, with Karch Kiraly and Steve Timmons another couple from the United States took third place ahead of two other Italian couples. Franco Bertoli and Fabio Fullo took fourth place, Andrea Anastasi and Roberto Masciarelli came fifth. The total prize pool was $ 40,000, of which Smith and Stoklos received $ 7,500 each.

Enoshima

The Japan Open lasted from August 4th to 6th. Only eight pairs of participants received a total of 50,000 US dollars in prize money, the two winners Karch Kiraly and Steve Timmons, like the winners in Italy, received a total of 15,000 dollars. The silver medal went to Edinho / Tinoco this time, the bronze medal went to one of four Japanese couples, Koichiro Kanno and Kazuyuki Takao, followed by their compatriots Akihiro Iwashima and Eizaburo Mitsuhashi. The best Europeans were Bastianelli / Fracascia from Italy in fifth place in front of a Russian and two other Japanese teams. The Jesi winners did not start.

Rio de Janeiro

The last tournament of the World Series 1989/90 lasted from February 13-18, 1990. Twenty-two pairs of participants competed for victory at the Brazil Open. The winners of the Japanese tournament were not there. Stoklos / Smith won their second tournament in the series, relegating their US compatriots Mike Dodd and Tim Hovland to second place. The bronze medal was won by two players from the host's country, Roberto Lopes and Franco Neto, followed by four more from a total of eight Brazilian teams that started. Twice Cuba, twice Australia, twice Chile, Italy, Estonia, Russia, Japan, Argentina and Mexico were the other participating countries. As in Enoshima, the total amount of the prize money was 50,000 US dollars, but the winners only received 6,000 dollars each, for which all participating couples received part of the prize money.
