Michael "Mike" Dodd (born August 20, 1957 in Manhattan Beach , California ) is a retired American volleyball and beach volleyball player . He also worked as a TV expert and trainer.

Career

Mike Dodd played on the AVP tour with Tim Hovland from 1981 to 1993 and also internationally with Mike Whitmarsh from 1993 to 1997 . The duo won the 1996 Grand Slam in Espinho and the world series tournament in Fortaleza . At the Olympic tournament in Atlanta they lost to their compatriots Charles Kiraly and Kent Steffes only in the final . The following year Dodd reached ninth place with Robert Heidger at the first World Cup in Los Angeles .

Dodd was one of the most successful players on the AVP tour in the 1990s . He achieved a total of 72 victories in the American tournaments. From 1994 to 1997 he was named best defensive player and player of the year several times.

Dodd also played successfully indoor volleyball in the US national team (1981-82 and 1985) and in the Italian A1 league (1982-84 and 1986).

At other Olympic tournaments Dodd was active in other functions. In 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens he worked as a TV expert for indoor and beach volleyball at NBC . In 2008 in Beijing he trained Jacob Gibb and Sean Rosenthal . In the following year he was the first coach to coach the winning duos for men (Gibb / Rosenthal) and women ( Nicole Branagh / Elaine Youngs ) at the Manhattan Beach Open .

Private

Mike Dodd is married to beach volleyball player Patty Dodd . They have two daughters and live in Manhattan Beach . His sister-in-law Carrie Dodd also played beach volleyball.
