The National Park Chustain Nuruu ( Mongolian Хустайн нуруу дархан цаазат газар , Birch Mountains National Park ) is a national park in Mongolia , which is 100 kilometers southwest of Ulaanbaatar in Töw-Aimag . It was founded in 2003. The Tuul River runs through the park .
Initially, in 1993, more than 50,000 hectares of the Chustain Nuruu area were declared a Category III protection zone. After fundamental scientific research, the area was upgraded to a national park with an area of 506 km² in 1998. The park is operated by the Hustai National Park Trust (HNPT) founded in 2003 in cooperation with the Mongolian Ministry of Nature and Environment. The park can be explored with your own car on paved dirt roads. Depending on the season, an off-road vehicle is recommended.
Wildlife
In addition to the resettled Przewalski wild horses , Siberian elk , Mongolian gazelles , deer , argalis , Siberian ibex , wild boar , wolves , lynxes , manuls , steppe foxes , red foxes, badgers and marmots can also be found in the park . Golden eagles , bearded vultures and black storks are among the 127 species of birds in the park .
