Location of the Tow Aimag in Mongolia

The Töw-aimag ( Mongolian Төв Аймаг , central aimag ' ) is an aimag (province) in Mongolia .

The independently administered capital Ulaanbaatar is an enclave within this aimag.

geography

The aimag includes the western part of the Chentii Mountains , the mountains around the capital, and areas of predominantly hilly steppe in the south and west. The most important watercourse is the Tuul Gol, which flows through Ulaanbaatar and later flows into the Orkhon .

population

The Töw-Aimag is predominantly inhabited by Khalkha Mongols, but there are also small groups of ethnic Kazakhs (1.1%) and Buryats (0.9%).

traffic

The central transport hub is located in the enclave of Ulaanbaatar, which is home to the largest station of the Trans-Mongolian Railway and the Chinggis Khaan International Airport . There is also a small airfield with an unpaved runway in the Aimag capital Dsuunmod .

Culture

Mandsushir Chiid near Zuunmod in Bogdkhaan Uul National Park. It was founded in 1733 and housed 20 temples and 300 monks. Most of it was destroyed by the communists in 1932. The last temple was restored after democratization and now contains a small museum.

In the region there is an equestrian statue of Genghis Khan , which with a height of around 40 meters is currently the highest equestrian statue in the world (status: 2011).

National parks

The Gorchi Tereldsch National Park was established in 1993. It covers part of the Chentii Mountains . It is particularly known for its sometimes spectacular rock formations, including a rock that looks like a giant turtle from the right perspective. The landscape is of alpine character, with larch and pine forests, bubbling mountain streams and a very diverse flora and fauna.

In the Chustain Nuruu National Park about 120 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, the original wild horses Takhi ( Przewalski's horse ) of Mongolia were released again from 1993 . The project is very successful and the animals have become an attraction for both scientists and tourists.

The mountain Bogd Khan Uul south of Ulaanbaatar has been a protected area since 1778, as it was considered sacred. Under socialism it was also formally elevated to a national park. This prevented urban sprawl around the capital in a southerly direction.

Maidar City

The Maidar City urban development project is planned for Sum Sergelen . This project will multiply the population of this aimag. Maidar City is planned for 280,000 inhabitants, of which the first 90,000 are to live in the new eco-city as early as 2030. Maidar City should relieve Ulaanbaatar and take over its capital function.
