Location of the Chöwsgöl aimag in Mongolia |
Coordinates: 50 ° 0 ' N , 100 ° 0' E
The Chöwsgöl-Aimag (also Khuvsgul or Khövsgöl, Mongolian Хөвсгөл Аймаг ) is an aimag (province) of Mongolia . It lies in the north on the Russian border and contains the northernmost point of the country. The administrative center of the area is Mörön . Chatgal was the capital until 1933 .
The name is derived from Lake Chöwsgöl Nuur , which, together with its surroundings, has had the status of a national park in Mongolia since 1992 . Around the lake and north of Chöwsgöl Nuur are the largest forests in Mongolia. They are a continuation of the South Siberian taiga. The Chöwsgöl Nuur is also known as the "small Baikal (lake)".
traffic
The Mörön Airport (ZMMN / MXV) has a paved runway. It has regular flights to and from Ulaanbaatar and also serves as a stopover for some of the western aimags.
Chatgal Airport (HTM) is only served by scheduled flights to and from Ulan Bator in summer and thus serves to develop Lake Chöwsgöl for tourists.
