Location of the Süchbaatar aimag in Mongolia

Coordinates: 46 ° 42 '  N , 113 ° 18'  E

The Süchbaatar-Aimag ( Mongolian Сүхбаатар Аймаг ) is an aimag (province) of Mongolia , located in the east of the country.

This aimag was named after the Mongolian revolutionary hero Damdin Süchbaatar .

Geographical location

In the east of Mongolia, the hilly steppe turns into an undulating to flat landscape. In the south the vegetation corresponds to a semi-desert, as the northeastern branch of the Gobi . The mean altitude is between 1000 and 1200 m.

Apart from that, there are 220 extinct volcanoes in the Süchbaatar-Aimag.

traffic

Overland trips are practically only possible on horseback or with an off-road vehicle.

Baruun-Urt Airport (ZMBU / UUN) has two runways, one of which is paved.

economy

The Süchbaatar-Aimag is one of the lowest income areas of Mongolia, without any industry worth mentioning. The people in the country live almost exclusively from nomadic cattle farming, in the far north there is also arable farming.

Most of the residents of the capital Baruun-Urt live from the local zinc mine or one of the nearby coal mines.

Culture

The Erdenemandal Chiid monastery is just a reminder of its former glory. The original location about 20 km away is said to have housed seven temples and 1,000 monks until it fell victim to the Stalinist purges of 1938.

In the Churgurin Chundii valley there are around a dozen stone statues from the 10th to 13th centuries. The meaning of the figures is controversial.

nature

Large populations of Mongolian gazelles live in the steppe. Other wildlife include foxes, wolves, marmots and wild cats.

The cone of the extinct volcano Shiliin Bogd Uul with its height of 1778 m can be seen from all directions from a distance of 60 km. It is the origin of a Mongolian legend of brave men who are said to have robbed the rich for the benefit of the poor, similar to Robin Hood.

The Taliin Agui lava cave is more than 200 m long and holds about 100,000 cubic meters. It is one of the largest and most spectacular cave systems in Mongolia, with a total of 7 chambers. The entrance is frozen over for a large part of the year and is usually only accessible from August.

The Molzog Els dune area is about 250 km² and is located in the south of the Sum Ongon and Dariganga. The area is surrounded by several small lakes, including Lake Ganga. It is framed by shrubbery , which slows down the transport of the sand and thus prevents the dunes from migrating.

The Ganga Lake serves as a gathering place for thousands of cranes and other migratory birds in autumn. It is located 17 km south of the Dariganga administrative center. The area around the lake is designated as a protected area, but its ecosystem is still endangered by grazing the banks.
