The Darchan-Uul-Aimag ( Mongolian Дархан-Уул Аймаг ) is an aimag (province) of Mongolia . It is located in the north of the country, embedded as an enclave in the Selenge Aimag .

history

The city of Darchan was founded on October 17, 1961 as a second industrial center to reduce the settlement pressure on Ulan Bator . For this purpose, the previous Sum of the same name was dissolved and its territory subordinated to the city administration.

The Darchan-Uul-Aimag with its 4 Sum was spun off from the Selenge-Aimag in 1994 .

economy

Darchan is the second largest industrial center in Mongolia. This includes companies in the light, food and building materials industries. The pioneer of Mongolian heavy industry is the Metallurgical Plant Darchan (DMP), established in 1994, which produces 100,000 tons of cast iron and steel per year with 500 employees.

The aimag itself essentially serves as the hinterland for the city.

traffic

In Darchan the railway line to Erdenet branches off from the main line of the Trans-Mongolian Railway , which connects the northern Suchbaatar on the Russian border with Ulan Bator.
