The Bajan-Ölgii-Aimag ( Mongolian Баян-Өлгий Аймаг , Kazakh Баян Өлгей ) is an aimag (province) of Mongolia .

geography

The aimag is located in the far west of the country and borders both Russia and the People's Republic of China . The border between the two neighboring countries is very short here and ends after about 40 km at the eastern end of Kazakhstan . The neighboring aimags in Mongolia are Uws in the northeast and Khovd in the southeast.

Bajan-Ölgii is the highest aimag in Mongolia. A large part of it is located in the Mongolian Altai , at the interface to the Russian Altai. About 10% of the area is covered by forests, which mainly consist of the Siberian larch .

The Chüiten summit ('cold summit', also Nairamdal Orgil 'friendship summit' ) of the Tavan Bogd massif ('five saints') on the Mongolian-Chinese border is the highest point in Mongolia at 4,374  m . The massif contains several glaciers, including the 19 km long Potanii , and is only accessible to experienced climbers with a local guide.

The Khovd river (the longest in Mongolia) has its origin in this aimag. It rises from the three lakes Choton, Churgan and Dajan and later flows into Lake Char Us Nuur in Chowd-Aimag . The Tolbo Nuur is a large salt lake about 50 km south of the main town at an altitude of 2080  m . Its water is clear and cold.

population

Most of the residents of Bajan-Olgii are of Kazakh descent, and their traditions differ significantly from those of the rest of the Mongols due to their Islamic beliefs. Smaller parts of the population are made up of Chalcha , Dorwod , Urianchai and Choschuud . A significant proportion of the population does not speak Mongolian as their mother tongue , but Kazakh .

Shortly after democratization, many Kazakhs emigrated to Kazakhstan, assuming they would find a better future there. This resulted in a significant decrease in the population. However, these hopes were often not fulfilled and some of the emigrants returned.

Culture

The Kazakh majority has an Islamic culture. The Mosque of Ölgii houses the Islamic Center of Mongolia. It sits at an unusual angle in the urban fabric, as the building was oriented precisely towards Mecca . There is also a madrasa (Koran school) at the same place .

Traditional hunting with the help of trained eagles is also famous . The animals are used in a manner similar to that used elsewhere with falcons.

traffic

The Ölgii Airport (ZMUL / ULG) has a runway. It was unpaved until 2011. It has regular flights to and from Ulan Bator and irregular flights to Almaty in Kazakhstan .

From Tsagaanuur there is a road connection to Russia.

National parks

The over 600,000 hectare Tavan Bogd National Park is located south of the highest mountain in Mongolia and contains the lakes Choton, Churgan and Dajan. The sanctuary is home to many high-alpine animal species, such as Argali sheep, Siberian ibex , red deer , stone marten , elk , ptarmigan and golden eagle .

The Choch Serch Conservation Area and the Siilchem Nuruu National Park have similar characteristics, even if they are much smaller.

The Develiin Aral Nature Reserve contains the Develiin Island at the confluence of the Lsan Chooloi and Chowd rivers . It has been protecting various water-loving animals such as pheasants , wild boars and beavers since 2000 .

The Tsambagaraw-Lul National Park covers a good 100,000 hectares around the glaciers on the border with the Chowd-Aimag and in particular protects the snow leopards that live there .
