The Char Us Nuur ( Mongolian Хар Ус нуур , "black water lake " ) is a large freshwater lake in western Mongolia . It is located in the north of the Chowd-Aimag east of the city of Chowd . The lake is about 1160 m above sea level, the water surface covers 1,486 square kilometers. The deepest part of the lake is only 4.5 m deep. The largest tributary is the Chowd Gol River , which forms a delta at the confluence with the lake.
Char Us Nuur National Park
The Char Us Nuur National Park is located around the lake. It was founded in 1997 on the recommendation of the WWF and covers an area of 8,500 square kilometers. It is home to threatened species such as the Altai giant wild sheep , the Siberian ibex , the snow leopard and the black stork . In addition, the park protects one of the most important wetlands in Mongolia, which serves as a resting place for over 200 different species of birds.
