history
Significant deposits of copper ore were discovered in northern Mongolia in the 1950s . Erdenet, one of the youngest cities in Mongolia, was built in 1975 for the workers of the new copper mine. In 1977 a single-track railway line of 120 km in length was opened, which connects the city with Darchan , an important traffic and industrial center on the Trans-Mongolian Railway . In 1981 a carpet factory was set up in Erdenet. Around the mid-1980s, more than 50% of the population were Russian engineers or miners, who shaped life and everyday life in Erdenet to a considerable extent. After the political change in 1990 and the end of the Mongolian People's Republic , most of them left the city, where today only 10% Russians live. Some residents of Erdenet joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , which planted a ward to the west of the city.
traffic
The airport (ZMED / ERT) is no longer used.
Erdenet is the end point of a single-track, non-electrified branch line of the Trans-Mongolian Railway , which branches off the main line in Darchan and on which one train runs in each direction every day. The city's relatively small train station is 9 km east of the center.
Erdenet is connected to the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, as well as to the nearest cities Bulgan and Darchan by a well-developed asphalt road. A bus line serves the Erdenet - Ulaanbaatar route twice a day in both directions.
economy
The fourth largest copper mine in the world, a Mongolian- Russian joint venture, is located in Erdenet . It generates the majority of the Mongolian export volume and tax revenue. For a long time only copper concentrate was exported, since 2005 pure copper has also been produced.
In addition, there is an internationally known carpet factory as well as companies in the food and wood industry .
education
The Mongolian University of Science and Technology is located in Erdenet.
