Darchan ( Mongolian Дархан ,ᠳᠠᠷᠬᠠᠨ) is the third largest city in Mongolia and the capital of Darchan-Uul-Aimag (Mongolian province). The name means "blacksmith" and was chosen to signal the intended task of the city.
history
The foundation stone of the city was laid on October 17, 1961. It was conceived as an industrial site in order to cover production for northern Mongolia within the framework of the socialist planned economy. The construction took place with massive support from the Soviet Union .
population
76% of the Aimag's population live in the city, most of them in prefabricated buildings , the rest in yurt settlements . The proportion of Russian-born residents is higher than in other cities in Mongolia.
traffic
The Trans-Mongolian Railway stops in Darchan. Of particular importance is the sideline to Erdenet , which transports the copper mined there.
Parallel to the railway line, the important road connection from Ulan Bator to Süchbaatar passes Darchan.
Culture
An old wooden house in the center houses the Charagiin monastery , whose operation was resumed after democratization.
The Museum of Traditional Folk Art displays a collection of archaeological artifacts, traditional clothing and cult objects.
