Current functions

Ulrich Trottenberg has been managing partner of InterScience GmbH since 2012 and also managing director of InterScience-Akademie für Algorithmik GmbH since 2019

. Until spring 2012 he held the chair for applied mathematics and scientific computing at the University of Cologne , as well as head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI). Since the founding of scapos AG in 2009 he has been its chairman of the supervisory board.

His research areas are numerical simulation , mathematical modeling, numerics of partial differential equations and large linear systems of equations , multi-grid methods , parallel algorithms and computer architectures, multidisciplinary simulation, and general mathematical principles of fast algorithms.

He is currently focusing on the numerical aspects of data-intensive algorithms, the interplay between mathematics and computer science and the role of algorithms in mathematical and computer science didactics.

biography

Ulrich Trottenberg studied mathematics, physics, philosophy and business administration from 1964 to 1969 as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation. He received his doctorate (1972) on non-negative Green functions and completed his habilitation (1976) with contributions to the rapid solution of partial differential equations at the University of Cologne . At the age of 31 he was appointed to a professorship for applied mathematics at the University of Bonn .

In 1981 he became professor of engineering mathematics at the University of Essen , and in 1984 he accepted an appointment as professor of applied mathematics at the University of Cologne on. Since 1983 director of the GMD (Research Center Information Technology), he initiated the national parallel computer project SUPRENUM in 1984 and was chairman of the management of SUPRENUM GmbH / Pallas GmbH from 1986 to 1992. In 1990 the SUPRENUM prototype was the fastest MIMD parallel computer in the world for a while. From 1992 to 2012 he headed the Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI), which has been part of the Fraunhofer Society since 2001 . During this time he initiated major European and national software projects (GENESIS, EUROPORT, AUTOBENCH, SIMDAT, etc.). In 1995 and 1996 he was also visiting professor at the Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences at New York University . From 2001 to 2006 he was deputy chairman of the board of directors of the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Communication Technology (IuK-Verbund). From 2006 to 2009 Trottenberg took over the office of chairman of the board of directors at the Fraunhofer Institute Center Schloss Birlinghoven .

From 2000 to 2010 he was also head of the Simulation and Software Technology Institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Committees and awards

After his time as managing director of SUPRENUM / Pallas GmbH, Ulrich Trottenberg was chairman of the scientific and technical advisory board of Pallas GmbH from 1992 to 2002. From 1993 to 2003 he was chairman of the advisory board of the CFGauss-Minerva-Center for Scientific Computation at the Weizmann Institute in Israel. Since 1987 he has been a member of the board of trustees of the Wissenschaftspressekonferenz eV ("Die Wissenschaftsjournalisten", WPK).

. From 2001 to 2006 he was a member of the national coordination committee for the procurement and use of high-performance computers and from 2002 to 2008 a member of the advisory board of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research . From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the Steering Board of the European technology platform NESSI (Software and Services Initiative). From 2005 to 2010 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of T-Systems SfR GmbH. In 2007 he was appointed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to the coordination group for the "Year of Mathematics 2008". From 2009 to 2018 he was President of the Association of Friends and Supporters of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Trottenberg worked regularly as a mathematical expert and consultant for the BMBF and the EU until 2019 .

In 1987 Ulrich Trottenberg received the Humboldt Research Prize for the scientific collaboration between France and Germany. He won several prizes for his contributions in parallel computing (SuParCup 1993, 1995, ECCO 1993). In 2012 he was awarded the Fraunhofer Medal for his special services to the Fraunhofer Society.

Publications and graduations

Ulrich Trottenberg published several books and a total of around 150 mathematical and IT papers in specialist journals. His best known book is the monograph "Multigrid" (Academic Press 2001).

As a first reviewer, he supervised and assessed approx. 35 mathematical doctoral theses, more than 100 diploma and state examination theses; Professors Rudolph A. Lorentz, Cornelis W. Oosterlee and Axel Klawonn completed their habilitation with him.
