Bácsalmás [ ˈbaːtʃɒlmaːʃ ] ( Croatian Aljmaš and Bačaljmaš ) is a Hungarian town with almost 7000 inhabitants (as of 2011) in the district of the same name in Bács-Kiskun County . It is located about 200 km south of Budapest directly on the border with Serbia .

German and Croatian minorities

Before the Second World War, Almasch / Bácsalmás was a multiethnic community with a strong minority of Germans ( Danube Swabians ) and Croats . After a substantial part of the Germans were expelled in 1946, Hungarian refugees were resettled from what is now Slovakia . At the same time, the Croatians have gradually assimilated themselves over the past few decades . At the census in 2001 there were only 229 inhabitants who declared themselves to be part of the German minority and 125 inhabitants of the Croatian minority.
