The long- tailed marmot ( Marmota caudata ), also known as the long-tailed marmot or red marmot, is a species of the squirrel family .
Distribution area
The distribution area of the long-tailed marmot joins that of the steppe marmot and includes the western part of the Tianshan Mountains and Pamiro-Alai . It is also found in the west of the Kunlun , in the Hindu Kush , in Afghanistan's Badachshan and Karakoram, and in northern Kashmir .
Within this rather large distribution area, the long-tailed marmot can usually be found at altitudes between 1,400 and 4,800 meters. The largest settlements can be found in the high mountain steppes of the Alai and the high mountain deserts of the East Pamir .
Systematic classification
The structure of the genital bones is also used to systematically classify the marmots. In the red marmot, the penis bone has a particularly complex structure compared to the other species. In the anterior section, the bone has a keel that is absent in other species of marmots. The bone is strongly rounded at the base.
