The Volleyball Hall of Fame was established in Holyoke , Massachusetts in 1971 to honor the players, coaches, and key figures in the sport of volleyball (and beach volleyball ).

In 1971 the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce set up a committee to promote the city as the cradle of volleyball. The American Volleyball Federation decided to make the Holyoke Public Library the official repository of the volleyball archive. Plans for a site to house the museum were revealed until 1985, when volleyball inventor William G. Morgan was inducted into the Hall of Fame as the first member. The following year, 1,600 m² of exhibition space was installed in a local building. The hall was officially opened on June 6, 1987.
In 1995 the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the volleyball game took place. A new building was then opened in autumn 1997.
Selection process
Nominations for induction into the Hall of Fame must meet the following criteria:
- The career must have ended for at least five years.
- A significant national or international recognition of at least ten years for the nominee's performance must be proven.
- Significant recognition is measured, among other things, by: National titles, participation at the national level, international medals, selection for the All-Star-Team at a tournament or in a season.
Every member of the Hall of Fame is entitled to vote. New members are accepted with an approval of 75% of the votes cast.
