Magaly Carvajal

Magaly Esther Carvajal Rivera (born December 18, 1968 in Havana ) is an originally Cuban , later Spanish national volleyball player .

Carvajal won the gold medal twice in a row at the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996, as well as gold at the 1994 World Championships and silver in 1986. In addition, she received individual honors as the best blocker in several international competitions.

Carvajal is 1.90 m tall with a tee height of 3.30 m (at best times) and played in the middle block, in her later career in Spanish clubs on diagonal and also acts from behind the field. Magaly has been a Spanish citizen since 1998 and has played a number of international matches for Spain. With Tenerife Marichal , she won the Champions League against Despar Perugia in 2003/04 with an outstanding performance . Her extraordinary performance led to her being signed for the play-offs by the top club and favorites Murcia in 2005. Except for Tenerife, she played for Las Palmas, for which she was still active in 2008/09 at the age of 40 and was high in the individual statistics of the league. In the 2009/10 season Carvajal was the best point collector at the Spanish first list CV Traysesa Santa Cruz (Tenerife) and was once again voted into the best line-up in the league several times. In the 2011/12 season she played again in the first Spanish division at Cuesta Piedra Santa Cruz (Tenerife). In 2013/14, at the age of 45, she played in the first Spanish division at CV IBSA ACE Gran Canaria 2014 and was one of the league's top scorers.

Carvajal is considered one of the best blockers of all time and set the standard for future Cuban stars like Regla Torres , Ana Ibis Fernández , Mirka Francia , Zoila Barros and Nancy Carrillo . US attacker Caren Kemner said of her in 1992: "I have never seen so many arms in a block in my life."

In 2011 Carvajal was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
