Grill den Henssler (in season 1 with the subtitle the new cooking arena ) is a cooking show on the TV channel VOX . The show is a revision of the Die Kocharena format , which it replaced.

Since 2020, presenter Laura Wontorra has been leading the show, the 12th season of which has been running since summer 2020.

format

Professional chef Steffen Henssler

In the show, three celebrities (occasionally also three teams of two) compete in a culinary competition against TV chef Steffen Henssler . The aim of the program is to have cooked or earned the most points overall.

In the course of the program, four courses are cooked: In the first cooking round, the so-called improv course, in which a dish has to be prepared within eight minutes, the celebrities compete against Henssler. In the other courses, in which a different time limit of a maximum of 30 minutes (in exceptional cases a little more) is set, they cook alone. They are coached by a professional chef. He has rehearsed the dishes to be cooked with you beforehand; During the broadcast, he is allowed to help with serving from 90 seconds before the end of the cooking time, so that the jury cannot recognize the plates of the professional and the layman by the optics (up to season 7, the information was only given from a high seat, since then from a small demarcated stage out). Henssler, on the other hand, is only given the required ingredients in the broadcast and without a recipe.

At the end of each course, the dishes are judged by a jury. Football manager Reiner Calmund has been a permanent judge on the show since the show began. At the beginning of the ninth season, chef Christian Rach and comedian Mirja Boes will judge the dishes alongside him . During the jury assessment, Henssler and the respective celebrity, including the chef's coach, are behind a screen so that the jury can judge neutrally. The winner of the respective cooking round donates their prize money of 4,000 euros (3,000 euros in the first season) to a charitable cause.

Between the cooking stages, a total of three so-called “kitchen competitions” are carried out, in which small tasks on dexterity, perseverance or the like are played. Three additional points can be earned for the final result per competition.

New features from season 7

As part of a redesign, the entire studio was rebuilt for the seventh season. The previous red has been replaced by gray and elements of wood and stainless steel. In addition, some rules of the broadcast have been changed:

  • The cooking coach was allowed to help the entire time to a certain extent with the preparation of the dishes on a coach stage, which he was not allowed to leave until 90 seconds before the time ran out; He was still forbidden to taste. The high seat was no longer there - except in the summer special 2017. Since the ninth season only hints can be given again.
  • Instead of the plate colors red and green, the plates are now red and blue.
  • All ingredients were now sorted separately on a shelf in the background. There was no longer any food in the fridges and drawers inside the kitchen. The gates in front of the shelves closed four to five minutes before the end of the cooking time, so that no more ingredients could be fetched afterwards. In the first broadcast of the seventh season, the gates in the improv section were closed three minutes before the end, from the second broadcast onwards they remained open for the entire time. In the eighth season the gates in the improv gear were closed 90 seconds before the time ran out. Since the ninth season, all food is back in the kitchen area.
  • The privacy screen between the jury and the cooking team, which previously consisted of two colored refrigerator doors, is now a large wall that has been lowered from the studio ceiling. Half of the wall is painted in the respective plate color.
  • In the improv section there was ten minutes instead of eight. After five minutes, both teams were presented with an eighth ingredient to be processed that even the celebrity team knew nothing about. From the eighth season, this rule was dropped again. Since the ninth season, only three ingredients have been specified, the time limit is still eight minutes.

New from season 11

With the beginning of the 11th season on May 10th, 2020, the “Coach Competition” was introduced in front of the improv course. Both the cooking coach and Henssler have to taste a certain ingredient in a candy and name it as quickly as possible. If the answer is wrong, the other person receives the price. The winner receives a symbolic minute with which he can deduct one minute of cooking time from the challenger within a cooking cycle (except for the improv cycle). With the celebrity team, the time in which the coach can help is reduced from 90 to 30 seconds. Henssler decided the previous two duels all for himself, whereby he once waived the redemption of the "penalty minute". In the third edition, the duel was not carried out.

After Steffen Henssler switched to ProSieben after the summer special 2017 , the program was temporarily suspended and instead the similar format Grill den Profi was broadcast.

On October 19, 2018, it was announced that Henssler was returning to VOX. On May 5, 2019, the ninth season started after a break of more than one and a half years.

1In broadcast 22 on April 26, 2015, Sonja Zietlow was supposed to compete against Henssler. Shortly before the dessert course began , however, Moschner and Zietlow surprised by swapping roles and Moschner cooked for Henssler, while Zietlow took over the moderation.

Henssler achieved the highest score of 111 points in broadcast 78 on November 17, 2019 against the celebrities Ben Blümel , the Ehrlich Brothers and Vanessa Mai with chef Stefan Marquard . At the same time, he and his children's team achieved the highest possible score for a cooking course twice in a row with 30 points each for the main course and dessert . The celebrity team also achieved the highest score of 104 points in issue 78.

The lowest score of only 69 points , with which Henssler won against the celebrity team, was achieved in the 38th edition on April 24, 2016. Although he received only 67 points in edition 80 on May 10, 2020, it was missing here Juror Mirja Boes (and thus also her scores) to the dessert course.

In broadcast 5 on October 27, 2013, Henssler reached the largest distance with which he could win against a celebrity team with 32 points . Guests were Regina Halmich , Thomas Rath and Jana Ina Zarrella with chef Ralf Zacherl .
