Oliver Knöbel (born November 21, 1969 in Springe ) is a German travesty artist who became known as a drag queen with his fictional character Olivia Jones and appears almost exclusively in this female role.

Career

During his school days at the Heinrich-Göbel-Realschule in Springe, Oliver Knöbel made his first travesty appearances. Always with the goal of show business in mind, he continued his education, including language training, acting classes and make- up courses. In 1989 the company moved to Hamburg . Knöbel introduced himself to the travesty artist and director of the Schmidt Theater Ernie Reinhardt (Lilo Wanders), who, impressed by his appearance and extraordinary height of originally 2.01 meters, gave him his first appearances in the powder keg cabaret and a little later for his first own show helped in the Schmidt Theater on the Reeperbahn .

In 1997 he had his international breakthrough as a drag queen: Knöbel's character Olivia Jones won the “Drag Queen Contest ” in Miami as the official “Miss Drag Queen Of The World” against numerous competitors from all over the world.

Knöbel received more and more television engagements . For example, he moderated the broadcast of Hamburg's Christopher Street Day several times for NDR , and for RTL he acted as a Grand Prix reporter and moderated galas (e.g. for UNICEF or the AIDS benefit gala red, hot & dance ).

In 2004 he took part in the talent show Star Duell on RTL. In the summer of 2005, Knöbel lived in the Big Brother village for a week and was again on the show in 2008. He toured Germany in 2007 in the travesty role with the bigFM morning presenter Hans Blomberg , the “Morgenhans”, with the reading They called me boobs monster . In 2007 he took part in the RTL-2 - documentary soap Frauentausch as a swap mother.

Since 2006 Knöbel has been organizing sightseeing tours for tourists along the Reeperbahn with Olivias Safari ; since 2007 also Hamburg harbor tours with Olivia Ahoi . On March 6, 2013, RTL Television signed Knöbel to act as the green room presenter for the tenth season of the talent show Deutschland sucht den Superstar .

In 2014 Knöbel played himself in his role as Olivia Jones in the episode Foul (367) of the series Großstadtrevier . In 2015 he dubbed the sixth season of RuPaul's Drag Race for TLC Germany . In November 2015 he was on the program Inas Nacht , and in November 2019 he had a guest appearance on Mord mit Ansage - Die Krimi-Impro Show on Sat.1 .

Political and social ambitions

Oliver Knöbel often uses his great role popularity and the extravagant appearance as a drag queen to support social projects. Among other things, he works as an ambassador for the animal rights organization PETA , supports AIDS projects, made Hamburg citizens aware of the planned closure of the Hamburg women's refuge and supports the Life Ball in Vienna .

In 2004 he took part in the Hamburg state elections as a single applicant with the aim of preventing Ronald Schill's Pro DM party from moving in . Without any election posters or election workers , he achieved a result of 0.5 percent and thus a better result than Schill's former party, the Rule of Law Party , which received only 0.4 percent.

He is an outspoken opponent of the NPD and showed this by working as a reporter for the satirical program Extra 3 at an NPD election campaign event.

In November 2007, Oliver Knöbel announced a new candidacy for the mayor elections on February 24, 2008 in Hamburg. He declared that he wanted to run as “nobody” so that potential non-voters could also vote “nobody”. He also promised not to attend any meetings of the citizenship and to donate his citizenship allowance to social projects. In January 2008 Knöbel withdrew his candidacy and declared that his voters should vote for the Greens .

At the ESC 2016, Knöbel appeared in the role of Olivia Jones as the first drag queen in the Word for Sunday in order to set an example for tolerance, diversity and respect together with a pastor .

In September 2016, Knöbel filed a complaint at the Davidwache for inciting people against the AfD Saxony-Anhalt , which on its Facebook page equated homosexuality and the education about it with child abuse . The background was a brochure from the Ministry of Justice and Equality of the State of Saxony-Anhalt with book recommendations on the subject of “homosexuality” and “same-sex relationships” for daycare centers and primary schools. Knöbel's children's book Don't be afraid in the other way was also on the list . Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen then invited him to a reading and panel discussion in the Magdeburg state parliament . There was also a meeting with the then chairman of the AfD parliamentary group, André Poggenburg .

In November 2016, the Lower Saxony parliamentary group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen nominated him as a member of the 2017 Federal Assembly , which elected the twelfth Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In August 2010, the continued NDR in the campaign The best thing about the north ... the fictional character Olivia Jones in Knoebel's birthplace Jump by a bench a memorial. The bank in front of the former Knöbels school bears the following quote from the "Hamburg original" (quote from NDR):

“The best thing about the north… is my school in Springe. Here men learned a lot that women would need later - and had a lot of fun as a gay butterfly in the school cocoon . I'm still not good at math - but I still have my own bank now. Seat!"

In autumn 2013 the local council of Springe named Knöbel as Olivia Jones the official honorary ambassador of the city.

In July 2017 Knöbel was awarded the Honorary Pride Award 2017 by Hamburg Pride , the organizers of the Christopher Street Day in Hamburg , which is rarely given. His political commitment is honored with reference to his work for the diversity of life patterns.

Trivia

In December 2016, Knöbel underwent a leg operation in which he had both legs shortened by six centimeters, so that his height is only 1.95 m instead of 2.01 m. As a result of this operation, he was seen with various walking aids in various television programs over the next few weeks and months, as well as during the election of the Federal President in February 2017.
