content

From December 2007 to February 2009

From December 2007 to the end of February 2009, Mitten im Leben was a classic documentary soap, according to RTL . Real everyday stories were shown in which the people shown were presented in a dramatically staged, entertaining manner.

Since March 2009

Since March 2, 2009, stories have been "retold" for the first time in the 4 pm edition. In the credits of the episodes you could read: Based on a true story. The characters involved are fictitious . Similar to suspected cases and families in focus, these were now posed scenes ( scripted reality ). There were exact scripts for each episode. The characters involved were exclusively amateur actors . Often times , pseudo-prominent people like Jürgen Milski or Menderes Bağcı were shown.

production

The program was produced on behalf of RTL by various production companies, such as Janus TV, Doppelklick TV or Filmpool . The episodes after 2010 were almost exclusively produced by Doppelklick TV. Many episodes were filmed in and around Cologne. Inexpensive amateur actors were hired as actors .

Charisma

New episodes of the program were broadcast Monday through Friday at 2 p.m. on RTL . Repetitions were broadcast in the morning at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. At the weekend there were repetitions in the afternoons at irregular start times. Occasionally, reruns were also broadcast at night. In September 2012, the format paused for several weeks. Similar scripted reality formats were broadcast at the time . For example, families in need of money and The Trovatos - detectives reveal . Furthermore, in the middle of life , you could access TVNOW for up to 30 days after the TV broadcast .

Odds

The rates of the first issues were below average. However, since the format was converted to scripted reality , the rates have risen. As a result, in the middle of life was also a model for other formats in the RTL afternoon program. In the meantime, the number of viewers has dropped significantly, but they are still at the same level as RTL's channel average.

criticism

The format was often criticized. The acting performances of the amateur actors were criticized and the scripts were unrealistic.

At the end of 2011, the State Agency for Media in North Rhine-Westphalia (LfM) and the Society for the Promotion of International Youth and Educational Television commissioned a study on scripted reality. According to the study, 51% of children and adolescents between the ages of six and 18 say that reality soaps with an imaginary plot help to solve problems. 30% of the respondents actually believe that the programs are real documentary soaps, whereas 48% said the soaps were re-enacted scenes from reality.

The result of the study shows that "the lack of recognition of the fictional character" leads to a "lack of distancing when confronting the problem situation". Television reduces people to "good" and "bad", nothing more.

The ARD - political magazine Panorama revealed in the issue of 7 July 2011 entitled "Lying television" a report on scripted reality. In the middle of life was also criticized . It was said that in such formats the audience is misled with invented dialogues and a reality is only faked.
