Thorsten Legat (born November 7, 1968 in Bochum ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer coach as well as a reality TV personality. In the summer of 2019 he took over the national division TuS Bövinghausen as head coach, but was released after four months.

Player career

Legat was a professional football player with VfL Bochum (1986 to 1991), Werder Bremen (1991 to 1994), Eintracht Frankfurt (1994/95), VfB Stuttgart (1995 to 1999) and FC Schalke 04 (2000 to 2001) under contract . He played 243 Bundesliga games , scored 15 goals, saw 34 yellow cards and one yellow-red card.

VfL Bochum

Legat comes from the youth of VfL Bochum and joined its professional squad for the 1986/87 season . On September 6, 1986, the 5th game day, he made his professional debut in the Bundesliga. In the 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach , the then Bochum coach Hermann Gerland replaced Peter Knäbel in the 69th minute . In the following game the midfielder was in the starting line-up of the white-blue team for the first time , completing the full 90 minutes. By the end of the season, the then young player had five other short appearances.

In the following years Legat gradually gained acceptance and developed into a regular. In the 1987/88 season he scored his first goal in a mandatory league game in a 4-4 draw against FC 08 Homburg ; Legat scored the goal for the interim 3-2 lead after he had been substituted ten minutes earlier for Minas Hantzidis . After Legat played a strong season in 1990/91 and had played the most games for Bochum after goalkeeper Andreas Wessels and was second best scorer of his team behind attacker Josef Nehl with seven goals, he moved to SV Werder Bremen in the summer of 1991.

Werder Bremen

During the three years that Legat played for Bremen, the midfielder was regularly included in the starting line-up. In 1992 he celebrated his greatest success in active football when he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Bremen . After he had played both games in the semifinals against Club Bruges , Legat was only a spectator in the final against AS Monaco , which the Bundesliga team won 2-0. In the following year he celebrated the German championship with the Hanseatic League. In the 1993/94 season Legat played 22 games, but was only substituted in or out eight times. At the end of the season, SV Werder Bremen won the DFB Cup .

Eintracht Frankfurt

In the summer of 1994, Legat moved to Eintracht Frankfurt , where he was supposed to replace Uwe Bein in the 10th position - a role that the more defensive Legat could not cope with. Together with Ralf Falkenmayer , Jay Jay Okocha and Ralf Weber , he formed the basic structure in the midfield of Hessen. After Legat had been a regular player for the first half of the season , his situation worsened and he came in the second half of the season to only seven games, where he was substituted on or off four times. In the league, the Frankfurters finished ninth this season, in the UEFA Cup , the team was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Juventus Turin .

VfB Stuttgart

After only one year in Frankfurt, Legat went to VfB Stuttgart . In four years with the Swabians he never managed to become a regular. Against competitors like Andreas Buck , Matthias Hagner , Marco Haber , Krisztián Lisztes or Gerhard Poschner , the defensive player rarely prevailed. After two Achilles tendon operations , he was no longer considered by coach Ralf Rangnick before the 1999/2000 season , but still had a contract that ran until the end of the 2001 season. After a racist failure against his teammate Pablo Thiam , he was terminated without notice at the end of 1999.

FC Schalke 04

At the beginning of 2000, Legat moved to FC Schalke 04 for two years . As in Stuttgart, the defensive all-rounder also had a hard time getting a regular place with the miners . Against players like Yves Eigenrauch , Nico van Kerckhoven or Markus Happe , Legat from coach Huub Stevens only rarely got a chance and so came to only four games for the Royal Blues in the first year . He had to wait until matchday 18 for his first appearance before Stevens put him in the starting line-up in a 2-1 away win at Arminia Bielefeld . In 2001 he had to end his career due to a disability in sports after he had not played for the entire season.

Coaching career

Between 2004 and 2005 Legat looked after the U-19s of SV Werder Bremen. From 2005 to 2007 he was the coach of the WSV Bochum 06, in 2008 he became the coach of the Witten soccer club TuRa Rüdinghausen . After arguments with the board and players, he resigned the club after a month. Since the beginning of 2010 Legat has been a coach in the youth department at SV Bergisch Gladbach 09 . At the end of the 2010/11 season, the club separated from him. From summer 2012 he looked after the U-15 juniors of Wuppertaler SV . On October 23, 2013 he took over the coaching position of the dismissed Joachim Hopp at the national league club 1. FC Wülfrath . At the end of 2014 he left the club.

From September 30, 2015, Legat was the coach of the regional division FC Remscheid . He resigned on May 1, 2016 with immediate effect.

At the beginning of October 2017, Legat was supposed to take over the coaching position at the sportily and financially troubled top division club TSV Marl-Hüls and initially accompany him until the winter break. Before it came to that, however, the team was withdrawn from the ongoing league operation.

For the 2019/20 season, Legat was hired as a coach by the state division club TuS Bövinghausen. After just four months, however, the club was dismissed.

Off the pitch

Assaults

During his time as an active player, Legat's career was overshadowed several times by derailments off the pitch. For example, on New Year's Eve 1996/97 in Bochum, he hit a man who was ready for hospital after he had threatened him.

In June 2007, Legat hit the headlines when he got into an argument with a group of young people in the parking lot of a fast food chain store in Remscheid who is said to have molested him. As a result, Legat drew a samurai sword , which earned him a judicial process for attempted dangerous bodily harm . This was stopped in December 2008 against payment of a sum of 1000 euros to a charitable institution .

Television appearances

In April 2014, Legat was a participant in the celebrity cooking show Hell’s Kitchen and reached the final. In the fall of the same year he competed in celebrity boxing , where he won his fight against rapper Trooper Da Don . He took part in various ProSieben events, including in November 2014 and October 2015 in the TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge and in April 2016 in the dodgeball championship .

In January 2016 Legat was a candidate in the tenth season of the RTL - reality game show Ich bin ein Star - Get me out of here! and took third place. In June 2016 he worked with his wife Alexandra on Das Sommerhaus der Stars - Kampf der Promipaare . The couple took second place. In July 2016 he was part of the Grill den Henssler summer special as well as Ninja Warrior Germany , and in August 2016 he took part in the show Bauer sucht Frau - The great farmers' Olympics in the team of celebrities. In December 2016 he lost to his competitor Detlef Soost at Schlag den Star . In January 2017 he strengthened the "Team Football" at the Duel der Stars - Die Sat.1 Promiarena . In September 2018 Thorsten Legat was seen as a candidate for Fort Boyard . In December Legat worked alongside Jasmin Wagner on “ The ProSieben Winter Games ”.

Private

Legat grew up with his three brothers with their parents in the Bochum district of Werne . In the 1990s he married Alexandra, with whom he now has two sons. He has lived with her and the children in Wermelskirchen in the Bergisches Land for years .

According to his autobiography When Life Is Playing Foul , Legat attributes his own violent outbursts to years of sexual abuse as well as brutal and humiliating assaults by the often drunk father during Legat's childhood against both himself and the rest of the family. The father died in 2005.

At Schlag den Star , Legat 2016 presented a tattoo with the words “Blood Honor Stolz & Familie”, which is strongly reminiscent of the National Socialist catchphrase “ Blood and Honor ”.

Since 2020 he has had the football podcast Legat & Pick - Die Spieltags-Stammtischer - together with the TV presenter Cedric Pick .
