Pablo Demba Thiam (born January 3, 1974 in Conakry ) is a former Guinean - German football player and current - functional .
Career as a player
societies
Thiam grew up as the son of a Guinean diplomat in what was then the federal capital of Bonn . When MSV Bonn he started playing football. As a 15-year-old he moved to the youth department of 1. FC Köln . With the B-youth of 1. FC Köln he became German champion in 1990. With the A-youth he reached the final of the DFB-Jugend-Kicker-Pokal in 1991 and the final of the German championship in 1992. In the same year he also obtained the higher education entrance qualification at the Belgian high school in Rösrath .
On November 5, 1994 (12th matchday) he made his debut in Germany's top division in the 1: 3 home defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach . Until shortly before the game, he didn't know that he should play. Nine missions later, on April 1, 1995 (24th matchday), he scored his first Bundesliga goal with a 1-0 lead in a 3-1 home win over his future employer, FC Bayern Munich .
In 1998 he moved to VfB Stuttgart . In 2001 he came to Bayern Munich , but was unable to assert himself here.
In January 2003 he moved to VfL Wolfsburg . There Thiam became a regular player, leader and captain of the green-whites . When Klaus Augenthaler became a coach in Wolfsburg in 2005, he moved more and more into the second tier and was often a reserve player. Between 2006 and 2008, he therefore only played 16 league games and was also used in the club's amateur team. At the end of the 2007/08 season , Thiam ended his active career after 311 Bundesliga games and 23 goals. With this number of Bundesliga games, he still ranked ninth in the ranking of foreign players with the most Bundesliga appearances in September 2012. Thiam also played 17 DFB Cup games (4 for Cologne, 5 for Stuttgart, 3 for Munich, 5 for Wolfsburg) and 8 international cup appearances (7 for Cologne, 1 for Wolfsburg in the UI Cup )
National team
For the national team of Guinea Thiam played 31 times and scored one goal. He participated in the African Championships in 1994 , 1998 and 2006 . In the first two tournaments he was eliminated with the team as third-placed in the respective preliminary rounds. In 2006, when they were first in the group , they only lost 3-2 to Senegal in the quarterfinals .
Career in management
Under the then coach and sports director Felix Magath , Thiam received a contract dated until 2010 as a management assistant at VfL Wolfsburg. He is now the sporting director of the U-23 regional league team at VfL.
