Nicolas "Nico" Van Kerckhoven (born December 14, 1970 in Lier , Antwerp Province , Flanders ) is a former Belgian soccer player who was under contract with Schalke 04 in Germany for six years and with Borussia Mönchengladbach for one year . He played 42 international matches for the Belgian national team . At the beginning of his career, the trained striker mostly played in offensive positions, so initially he was mainly active as a striker and a little later on the left wing (offensive as well as defensive); in the further course of his career he was then used more and more frequently in central defense.
Player career
society
Before Nico Van Kerckhoven moved to the German Bundesliga club Schalke 04 for the 1998/1999 season, he played for the Belgian first division Lierse SK for ten years . With the Liers team he became Belgian champion in 1997 and so Van Kerckhoven was allowed to compete in the Champions League with his club in the following season after Anorthosis Famagusta had been eliminated in qualifying . However, the Belgians were the last in their group to be eliminated with only one point - more or less without a chance. Van Kerckhoven won the DFB Cup with the Knappen in 2001 . A year later he was even able to defend the title with the Royal Blues. Left-footed Van Kerckhoven was in the Gelsenkirchen team's starting line-up in both finals. After becoming runner-up in 2001, Van Kerckhoven was allowed to compete again in the European premier class. However, this guest appearance was just as unsuccessful as the first: Schalke 04 finished last in the group.
After his contract with Schalke expired at the end of June 2004, the ex-international joined league rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach for one year. During this season he fought under Dick Advocaat together with compatriot Joris Van Hout and the foal elf against relegation. In the end, they achieved relegation with 15th place. Van Kerckhoven and VfL had three different head coaches this one season. In spring 2005 he signed a two-year contract with the Belgian first division club KVC Westerlo for the coming season. Although he wanted to end his active career in his home country during these two years, it ended up being five. He played his last game at the age of 39 on April 17, 2010 against Cercle Bruges. Westerlo won the game 4-1 and Van Kerckhoven scored a penalty to make it 3-0. In mid-June 2010 he played his last game as an active player in Lint , where it all began more than 31 years earlier, and was said goodbye to much applause.
National team
Van Kerckhoven made his debut in the Belgian national team on May 29, 1996 in a 2-2 draw against Italy. He played for his country at the World Championships in 1998 (one use) and 2002 (two uses). At the European Championship , which took place in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2000, he was on the field in all three games of his selection. His last game for the Red Devils was on June 17, 2002 at the World Cup in Japan and South Korea in a 2-0 draw against Brazil, with which Belgium was eliminated in the round of 16.
Coaching career
After taking a year off from football, Van Kerckhoven was appointed as a youth coach at Lierse SK in the summer of 2011 , after talks between Van Kerckhoven and Herman Helleputte and Ives Serneels had already taken place , which convinced him to take this career step . In an interview at the same time, he said that he was in possession of a UEFA B license at the moment, but was already looking towards the UEFA A license. Furthermore, the multiple Belgian ex-international is still active as a futsal player at a club belonging to the Koninklijke Vlaamse Voetbalbond in Wijnegem , with whom he was champion three times in a row and made it to the second division. Van Kerckhoven was finally under contract until 2012; thereafter, however, this was not extended any further.
Private
Nico Van Kerckhoven comes from a football-loving family; his father Frans was active as a referee at the Koninklijk Katholiek Vlaams Sportverbond for over 32 years and also directed his son's farewell game.
His son Sander currently plays (as of the 2014/15 season) in the Lierse SK U-16 team.
