Vanessa Mai (born May 2, 1992 in Backnang ; real name Vanessa Marija Else Ferber , née Mandekić ) is a German singer and actress . She became known as a member of the hit band Wolkenfrei and has been working as a solo singer since its breakup.

Life

Mai occasionally accompanied her father, a native Croat and musician, with the tambourine . She was already on stage with him at the age of seven. At the age of ten she had her first vocal appearances with the titles He belongs to me and guilt was only the bossa nova and in the school musical The Wizard of Oz . In 2008, at the age of 15, she took part in the Hip-Hop World Cup in Las Vegas as part of the dance formation Getting Craz'd . This competed as German champion and took last place.

Mai graduated from secondary school at a secondary school . After finishing school, she trained as a media designer . She chose her stage name after the month she was born.

Since 2017 she has been married to her manager Andreas Ferber , a stepson of Andrea Berg , with whom she has been in a relationship since 2013.

Musical career

Beginnings with Wolkenfrei (2012-2015)

In the summer of 2012, the then Wolkenfrei singer Heike Wanner left the band for health reasons. During a concert visit, Wolkenfrei member Marc Fischer recruited Mai as a singer. In July 2013, the debut single Jeans, T-Shirt and Freiheit was released . The debut album Endlosliebbt followed in February 2014, with which they entered the album charts in all German-speaking countries. In April 2015 Marc Fischer and Stefan Kinski announced that they were leaving the band. Since then, the project has only been embodied by Mai (mostly with the addition of "Cloud-free star Vanessa Mai").

Second studio album Wachgeküsst (2015)

With Cloud 7 , the first single from the second album was released on 22 May. One day before the album was released, Deutsche Musik Fernsehen dedicated a 65-minute TV special to May and the album. The second studio album Wachgeküsst was released on July 10, 2015. In the ARD show The Best in Summer by Florian Silbereisen , Mai presented her single cloud 7 . Due to the large TV presence, the album reached position seven in the German album charts as well as other placements in Austria and Switzerland. It was Mai's first Top 10 success . The single cloud 7 reached position 54 in Germany and position 71 in Austria. On September 18, 2015, the second single from the album of the same name followed with Wachgeküsst . Three weeks later, on October 9, 2015, Maize's first live album was released with Wachgeküsst - Live from the Parktheater Augsburg . The last single In all your colors was released on December 11, 2015. A week later, a Christmas single was released with An Angel in the Christmas season.

Third studio album for you (2016-2017)

In February of this year, Mai finally decided not to use the artist name "Cloud Free" any longer. The first release of the upcoming album was released on February 19, 2016, Ich sterb für dich . From March to May 2016 she took part in the Schlager event series Das Beste der Feste Tour , where she was on stage on 34 evenings with Ross Antony , Feuerherz , Michelle , DJ Ötzi and Florian Silbereisen . On April 15, 2016, her third studio album was released, entitled Für Dich , which was produced by DSDS colleague Dieter Bohlen . This was followed by her first solo tour with 25 concerts, which took her through Germany, Denmark and Switzerland from September to November. On January 6, 2017, Für Dich - Live aus Berlin, a live recording of one of these concerts from the Tempodrom in Berlin on October 10, 2016, was released. On July 18, 2017, Mai released Für Dich - Akustik Best Of, her first best-of album . However, the compilation was published exclusively by the retail company Tchibo and was therefore only available as a download from their homepage and in all nationwide branches.

Fourth studio album Rainbow (2017-2018)

With the release of the first single, Und Wenn ich träum, on April 3, 2017, Mai announced her fourth studio album. On August 4, 2017, the second single Nie again followed , before the corresponding album Regenbogen was released a week later . The album reached the top position in Germany as well as position two in Austria and Switzerland, so rainbow is the most successful chart album Mais to date. In November of the same year Dieter Bohlen and Vanessa Mai announced that they would end their musical collaboration. In April 2018, Mai started her Rainbow Tour , which was overshadowed by an accident on her side and a bomb threat.

Fifth studio album Schlager (2018)

On May 18, 2018, Mein Sommer, the first promo single on Mai's upcoming fifth studio album Schlager, was released . Two weeks later, the second promo single followed with Love Song . The first official single, Wir 2 ​​always 1 , was released on July 6, 2018. This is a collaboration with the German-Ukrainian rapper Olexesh . The collaboration developed shortly before the album was ready in early June 2018, when Olexesh uploaded a video on his Instagram profile and asked Mai about a collaboration. This reacted on the same day and three days later both were in the studio together. The single reached position 33 in the Top 100 singles in Germany , which is the biggest chart success of Mai in the German single charts to date. Mai's fifth studio album, Schlager , was finally released on August 3, 2018 . After more than three months, the second official single from the album was released with Niemals on November 23, 2018. On December 3, 2018, Mai made a guest appearance with Alan Walker , who was a guest at Zenith in Munich during his tour . Mai took over the vocals on Walker's song Faded .

Your song and sixth studio album Forever (since 2019)

At the beginning of the year, Mai was part of the KiKA songwriting competition Dein Song , where musicians act as mentors for young songwriters . Mai supported the twelve-year-old Raphaela Gouromichou from Aalen . In the course of this format, the two took up the title I see the angel in you , a song that Gouromichou wrote for her mother. More than a third of the setlist consisted of tracks from Forever and other tracks from all of the older studio albums. In the middle of the concerts Mai presented an acoustic set consisting of three titles. On November 29, 2019, Did you ever release the fourth pre-release single from the upcoming studio album. The piece was created in collaboration with the German R & B - singer Xavier Naidoo . The accompanying music video shows the wedding between May and her real husband Andreas Ferber. A week later, a remix EP was released on December 6, 2019 with Ja No Maybe (Remixe). The EP consists of five remix versions of the song.

The fifth and final pre- single , Spiegel, Spiegel was released on January 10, 2020. The sixth studio album was finally released on January 24, 2020 with the title Forever . On May 16, 2020, Mai entered the newly initiated Free European Song Contest with a highlight (Ti si moja snaga) . When she participated, she represented Croatia , the country her father comes from. In the end, she finished ninth out of 16 places with 55 points and had to admit defeat to the winner Nico Santos with Like I Love You , Ilse DeLange ( Changes ) or Max Mutzke as an astronaut ( [back to the moon] ). In Highlight (Ti si moja snaga) is a re-recording of highlight , from the album Forever , with new Croatian language text lines. The piece was released as a single on the day of the Free ESC.

Other artistic activities

In January 2015 it was announced that May is the new face of the campaign Mein Herzschlag Schlager . To this end, she advertised this campaign with the help of a commercial and recorded the song of the same name, Mein Herzschlag Schlager , which was published on a sampler belonging to the project. From January to May 2016, Vanessa Mai was a member of the jury for the 13th season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar . In 2017 she took part in the tenth season of the dance show Let's Dance and took second place. At the end of August 2018, May had a guest appearance on the RTL show Freundinnen - Now even more . In November 2019 she defeated the star Luna Schweiger in the ProSieben show Schlag and won 100,000 euros.

In 2020 she made her television debut as an actress when she played a leading role alongside Axel Prahl in the feature film Nur mit Dir in the First . She entered the Free European Song Contest in May 2020 and finished ninth.
