Rainbow is the fourth studio album of the German pop - pop - singer Vanessa May .

Creation and artwork

As with the previous album Für Dich , most of the tracks on the album were written by the German composer, songwriter and producer Dieter Bohlen , he is the author of twelve of 18 tracks. With the exception of I can't sleep tonight , he wrote all the pieces by himself, he wrote the piece in question with Vanessa Mai. The remaining five titles were written by other individual authors. Only Lukas Loules (Lukas Hilbert) and Mai took part in more than one play with two authors each. Furthermore, rappers like FR (Fabian Römer) or Kitty Kat (Katharina Löwel) also work as authors.

All songs written by Bohlen were also produced by Bohlen. Joachim “Jeo” Mezei stood by his side as co-producer. He is the owner of the Hamburg Jeopark Studios, where the production also took place. The remaining productions come from Silverjam (3 titles) and Loulou (2 titles). The mastering of Rainbow was done under the direction of Mezei (13 titles) and MM Sound (5 titles). The album was mixed under the direction of Choukri Gustmann (2 tracks), Mezei (16 tracks) and Lulou (2 tracks). Gustmann also worked on the programming of two songs. In addition to the production work in the Jeopark Studios, some productions took place in the Madizin Studios, also located in Hamburg. Rainbow was published under the Ariola music label (a sub-label of Sony Music Entertainment ), published by BMG Rights Management , Hanseatic , Kobalt Music and Warner / Chappell , among others , and distributed by Universal Music Publishing .

On the cover of the album, only the artist name and song title can be seen against May against a pink background. She wears a pink dress and black bathing shoes covered with yellow plush and sits with her legs apart. The arms push the dress, which is sliding upwards, downwards on a reflecting surface. Inside the CD there is a twelve-page booklet that contains further pictures as well as lyrics and the contributors. All pictures were shot by Sandra Ludewig. The artwork is by Ronald Reinsberg.

Publication and promotion

The first publication of Rainbow was on August 11, 2017. The album consists of 17 new studio recordings and is available on CD and download. At the same time, two limited versions of the album were released. A box set and a CD were released, which was expanded to include a “bonus track”. The box is limited to 2,500 units and in addition to the album, a karaoke DVD, five postcards , a calendar for the year 2018, a DIN-A1 -Poster the cover image, a keychain , nine stickers and an "early entry pass" , which entitles you to early admission to all concerts on the Rainbow Tour and to participation in the soundcheck . On January 12, 2018 the album was released in a "Gold Edition". This consists of 19 songs and includes four new studio recordings, some originals from the regular album and some remixed versions. As in the rain box , the “Gold Edition” also contains 500 “early entry passes”, which were hidden at random, as well as a DIN A4 poster.

In order to apply for the album and to apply, there followed, among other things, live appearances during prime time with Dirndl! Finished! Come on! - The Oktoberfest show 2017 and the hit boom 2017 in the first , in the ZDF show Welcome to Carmen Nebel , in the RTL show Die 2 - Gottschalk & Jauch gegen alle as well as in the hit night in the Berlin Waldbühne in the RBB. This was followed by other appearances on the ZDF TV garden , on the NDR Talk Show , on Sat.1 breakfast TV , in the ARD morning magazine , on Donnschtig-Jass on SRF and on the VIVA Top 100 . As official advertising partner for Rainbow could RTL Television win them. Mai already advertised the album months in advance via her various social media channels. About a month before the release, she started a countdown in which she presented a new teaser for a different song every day. On June 14th and 15th, 2017, Mai had two guest appearances in episodes 6275 and 6276 of Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten , where she sang in “Masonry” among others And when I dream .

background information

Album production

In an interview, Mai justified the album title by saying that a rainbow is a "very wonderful sign". It is a symbol of purity and freshness as well as for the new experience after dark times. There would "actually" not be a person who is not happy about a rainbow. She associates a lot of positive things with it, such as love, hope, tolerance and equality. She hopes that the title will appeal to many different people. And it also fits because she wanted a colorful album with different facets.

She also reported that she had never been so much herself with any album as this time. She couldn't identify with any album as much as with Rainbow . "It's something completely different when you put your feelings, your pain into words," she added. It wasn't all of her songs, but she had worked on all of the pieces; so she could authentically implement her feelings. With the titles Never again and I can't sleep tonight , Mai published two pieces for the first time, which were also co-written by her. With regard to the upcoming concerts, she is of the opinion that this will enable her to tell her stories to the audience even more intensively, to make her own feelings even more plausible. That would give her enormous security. For years, Mai has been soaking up what was going on around her like a sponge. You could learn an infinite amount and now it is time to implement it all.

Separation of planks

About two months after the rainbow was published , Bohlen and Mai separated. It is unclear who the breakup came from. Both sides stated in various interviews that they wanted the separation. After many gazettes spoke of a “mud battle”, Mai made the following statement on November 7, 2017 via her Instagram profile: “Dieter Bohlen. I know some of you don't like him, but if I may say it a little strange: We owe it to Dieter that we all have each other today and for the next few years. He has supported us tremendously over the past few years and for me he is a very big player in German music! And now some media come along and want to see a "mud shaft" between us. But there is no such thing! Only the following is true: Dieter will not contribute any songs for my new album in 2018. Above all, this is a decision for new impulses and maybe a bit for something tried and tested. But definitely not against Dieter. ”In an interview with Closer, Bohlen gave the following reasons for the separation: He had the idea that the two would have to make more commercial hits. Mai had a different idea. Cooperation would then be of little use because it should be fun. But he still wishes her all the best.

In her Instagram post, Mai also stated that a new journey has already started. The statement about perhaps going back to something "tried and tested" was about the return to her old music producer Felix Gauder, with whom she already recorded new pieces for the new edition or the "Gold Edition" of Regenbogen .

content

Rainbow

All of the lyrics on the album are in German and are mostly written by Dieter Bohlen and other individual authors. All pieces are new compositions. Musically, the songs move in the area of pop hits . In addition to the main vocals from Mai, the voices of Billy King and Christoph Leis-Bendorff can be heard in the background, as with the predecessor Für Dich . She received further vocal support from Katerina Loules , Lukas Loules, Alex Prinz and Silverjam. For each of her songs she was accompanied by various instrumentalists (see contributors). Mai himself is of the opinion that rainbow is an album that does not consist of individual songs, more or less of musical set pieces. She feels like it's an album that's fun to listen to over and over again. In terms of content, most of the pieces on the album take up the most varied of facets around the theme of love.

Rainbow (Gold Edition)

The "Gold Edition" of Regenbogen contains a list of titles that differs greatly from the original. Only six tracks from the regular album - in its original version - made it to this new edition. In addition to the originals, there are nine remixes of previously published tracks on the "Gold Edition". The remixes come from, among others , Anstandslos & Durchgeknallt , Felix Gauder, Stefan Pössniker and Silverjam. In addition, with 1,000 songs , As long as there are you and Where you are, three new compositions can be found on the album. Last but not least, Irgendwie, somewhere, sometime is a cover version of the original by Nena , from 1984, on the "Gold Edition". The piece was already part of Mai's live album Für Dich - Live from Berlin .

After May parted ways with her producer Bohlen in November of last year, with one exception ( as long as you exist ) all new recordings were made under the direction of the former Wolkenfrei- and May producer Felix Gauder.

The rainbow karaoke DVD is Vanessa Mai's third video album and contains 21 karaoke tracks, most of which consist of pieces from the rainbow album as well as some of the singles from previous years. Four songs on the album didn't make it onto DVD. Not on the DVD are: Star Sea , Echo , Most Beautiful Moment and When That Is Really Love . Videos from various slide shows were compiled for all songs , in which excerpts from shootings, concerts or TV appearances can be seen. The official music videos for some of the songs can also be seen. Minimal May singing is heard throughout the stanzas, and Mai's voice is heard clearly in support in the choruses .

The DVD was released as part of the album and as a separate sound carrier. In Germany the sales are added to those of the album and are accordingly included in their chart evaluation. In Austria the DVD reached position ten in a chart week and in Switzerland position ninth in the music DVD charts in another chart week. This makes it Mai's third top 10 success in the music DVD charts in both countries and, after Für Dich - Live from Berlin, the second within a year.

Rainbow tour

Vanessa Mai live in Mannheim.

The Rainbow Tour was the second independent concert series of Mai as the main act. The tour extended over a period of one and a half months and consisted of 17 concerts. The setlist during the tour consisted of 23 tracks, with Mai presenting two tracks from her upcoming new studio album Schlager with Mein Sommer and Wiedersehen . The program consisted of a mixture of all four studio albums Mais, with most of the titles the studio album Rainbow . During the stage rehearsals - in the run-up to the planned concert in Rostock on April 21, 2018 - Mai had an accident with one of her dancers. She injured her spine and had to be hospitalized. In addition to the concert in Rostock, all other press appointments in the following weeks were initially canceled. Although Mai was not fully resilient, the rest of the appointments took place as planned. The stage show and the dance choreographies were adjusted so that they could be mastered for May. Furthermore, the concert in the Arena Kreis Düren in Düren was overshadowed by a bomb threat . According to Mai, the all-clear was given after an hour and the concert took place as planned. The safety precautions had been tightened according to Bild am Sonntag , which is why the concert was delayed by about 30 minutes. The fans were not told why the delay occurred.

Single releases

And when I dream

Already four months before the release of rainbow , the album's first single was released on April 3, 2017 with Und Wenn ich träum ( And If I Dream). Initially, it was only released as a promo single. One and a half months later the single was officially released as a download and a physical 2-track single on May 19, 2017. A music video shot by Oliver Sommer and produced by AVA Studios premiered on May 19, 2017 on YouTube . In And if I dream it's content to the uncertainty of a possible separation of a relationship that one is not ready to give up. It's about fighting for your love. The song met with little approval from the critics and was described, among other things, as a "lukewarm new infusion" by Ich derb für dich . To date, the piece has not been allowed to enter the official single charts, but the piece reached the top of the German conservative pop airplay charts .

Never again

A week before the album was released , the second single was released on August 4, 2017 with Nie wieder. The single was also released as a physical 2-track single. There are also various remix versions of Jeo and Frank Rapid that are available for download. The accompanying music video premiered on August 4, 2017 on YouTube. To date, the piece remained a chart entry into the official singles charts denied, however, she reached into the German Conservative Pop Airplay charts for four weeks, the chart peak .

In an interview with Focus Online , Mai described Nie again as her favorite track on the album. The piece had been lying in the drawer for several years. She already thought about releasing her first album . Many people around them thought the piece was too "dark" and that it would not "suit" her. She almost begged her husband to "block" him from her. She knew that at some point the day would come when he would be a perfect fit for her and now the time had come. She was glad that it was so, because now everything fits. Every time she played him, she could howl "like a castle dog". The fans sing along with him, saying that this is a “nice confirmation” for May.

Rainbow

With Rainbow , the third and so far last single release was published on December 1, 2017. The single was released as a 2-track single for download. The maxi single does not contain the album version, but two remix versions of the song. The remixes Hazienda Mix and Starchild Extended Remix are both from Felix Gauder. Three weeks before the official release, rainbow appeared in a piano version as a promo single. Shortly before the single was released, Mai separated from her producer Bohlen, various sources assume that the release of Regenbogen was a thank you to them. In order to promote the song, there was a live appearance at prime time in the DA-CH show Spiel für dein Land - The largest quiz in Europe . On December 1, 2017, a music video was released for the piano version. You can see mostly close-ups of corn singing the song against a natural background. As never again , Regenbogen missed the official single charts, but was also able to top the Conservative Pop Airplaycharts for three weeks.

Reviews

Dani Fromm from the German-language online magazine laut.de only awarded rainbow one of a possible five stars. Among other things, it described the music as the "Bummsdisco synth sound of the 90s". Furthermore, he feels numerous plucks. The chorus of Echo sounds like a "one-on-one copy" of Caught in the Acts Love Is Everywhere and This One Moment reminds me of Take Thats Back for Good . In And if I dream , Bohlen has at least enriched himself and the previous year's production I will die for you . I can't sleep tonight, Fromm compares with My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion , where Dion is a “gifted singer”, while Mai has “not an ounce of vocal volume”. The logic of the texts is "out of the woods". You have to have an "improperly performed lobotomy" behind you in order not to feel insolently offended in your "residual intelligence" by such "Gaga lyric poetry". Without chemical help, the “dulled stupidity” that “dribbled” out of every line of text is really unbearable. Mai would also come across as "maximum emotionless". For the first and only time on a rainbow , Fromm feels “truly” close to her with the following statement: “I can hardly breathe because of the pain”.

Charts and chart placements

Rainbow reached position one in the album charts in Germany and was able to stay at the top of the chart for one week, three weeks in the top 10 and 38 weeks in the top 100. Furthermore, after Wachgeküsst and Für Dich , Mai reached the top of the official hit charts for the third time and for the first time the top of the top 15 German-language albums in Germany. In Austria the album reached position two and only had to admit defeat to the Nockalm quintet with their album In der Nacht . The album stayed in the top 10 for three weeks and in the charts for 31 weeks. In Switzerland , Regenbogen also reached second position, but Land ob de Wolke had to admit defeat by the Wiesenberg yodelling club. The album stayed in the top 10 for two weeks and in the charts for 15 weeks. In 2017, the album was placed 69th in the annual album charts in Germany and 64th in Austria.

For May, Regenbogen is the fourth chart success in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is her third top 10 success in Germany and Austria, as well as her second in Switzerland. Rainbow is Mai's first number one success in Germany. It is their fourth studio album in a row, which was simultaneously placed in all DA-CH countries. To date, no album Mais has placed higher in all three countries.
