Creation and artwork

Emergence

Most of the tracks on the album were written by the German composer, songwriter and music producer Lukas Loules (formerly Lukas Hilbert), and he is the author of seven of 13 new tracks. Loules already had two author participations on the previous Rainbow . With six authors each, Felix Gauder and Oli Nova wrote the second-most titles. The two were among the main authors of the Wolkenfrei debut album Endlos in love and Mai's second studio album Wachgeküsst . The German hip-hop producer Choukri Gustmann wrote five titles, Katerina Loules - Lukas Loules' wife - four titles and Laura Kloos three titles. Katerina Loules already wrote the song Most Beautiful Moment on the previous song . Gustmann and Kloos first worked together with Mai. Furthermore, 16 other authors wrote occasional pieces, including Sera Finale , Olexij Kosarev ( Olexesh ), the Austrian music producers Hubert Molander and Emanuel Treu and the internationally successful Dutch DJ duo Showtek (Sjoerd- and Wouter Janssen).

Most of the new titles were produced by Gauder, he is a total of six productions. Gustmann and Lukas Loules follow with five productions each. Two productions come from the German producer trio Silverjam (consisting of: Patrick Benzner, Serhat Sakin, Dave Roth) and ultimately one from PzY. Vanessa Mai acted as executive producer . The mastering took place under the direction of Lex Barkey from Berlin. The album was mixed by Gauder (5 tracks), Gustmann (5 tracks) and two tracks by the German producer trio Madizin (Silverjam). In addition to Lukas Loules, Nova, Moritz Paschold, PzY and the Titans, the three parties were also responsible for the programming.

Schlager was published under the music label Ariola (a sub-label of Sony Music Entertainment ), by afm Publishing (13 tracks), ChampionsLeak Edition, Hanseatic Warner / Chappell , onetwofour Publishing and Shedler Music (5 tracks), Warner / Chappell (3 tracks) as well published by nine other music publishers and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment. The recordings were made in the jojo music studios in Stuttgart , the House of Music Studios in Winterbach , the Lap Top Studios and Paramount Studio C in Los Angeles , the Madizin Studios in Hamburg and in the Zum golden Bunker in Düsseldorf .

Artwork

On the front of the album cover - next to the artist name and song title - Mais's mouth can be seen. It shows her slightly open mouth up close, with two fingers on her lower lip . The fingers press the lower lip down so that the inside of it can be seen. The inside of the lower lip is adorned with the words "Schlager", which gives the appearance of being tattooed. The stage name is between the upper lip and nose. When asked whether the tattoo was real, Mai always replied with the statement that it would remain a secret. On the back of the album cover, Mai can be seen naked in a sea of flowers, only her intimate parts are covered by flowers. The back cover was presented for the first time on the day the album was released. Inside the CD there is a picture of corn that also shows it without a shell from the head to just above the breasts, against a blue background. Her face and upper body are adorned with various "Schlager" lettering. The photographs are all by Marius Sperlich. Before the official cover was published, an alternative cover image was used for promotion. This only shows the artist name and the song title against a pink background.

background information

Separation from Bohlen in the run-up to album production

About two months after the release of the previous studio album Regenbogen , Bohlen and Mai separated. It is unclear who the breakup came from. Both sides stated in various interviews that they wanted the separation. After many gazettes spoke of a “mud fight”, May made the following statement on Instagram on November 7, 2017 : “Dieter Bohlen. I know some of you don't like him, but if I may say it a little strange: We owe it to Dieter that we all have each other today and for the next few years. He has supported us tremendously over the past few years and for me he is a very big player in German music! And now some media come along and want to see a "mud shaft" between us. But there is no such thing! Only the following is true: Dieter will not contribute any songs for my new album in 2018. Above all, this is a decision for new impulses and maybe a bit for something tried and tested. But definitely not against Dieter. ”In an interview with Closer, Bohlen gave the following reasons for the separation: He had the idea that the two would have to make more commercial hits. Mai had a different idea. Cooperation would then be of little use because it should be fun. But he still wishes her all the best. Mai also said on Instagram that a new journey has already started. The statement about perhaps going back to something "tried and tested" was about the return to her old music producer Felix Gauder, with whom she already recorded new pieces for the new edition or the "Gold Edition" of Regenbogen .

Album title and "No more pigeonholed thinking"

In an interview with the Bild newspaper , in which Mai was asked how the album title “Schlager” came about, she replied as follows: “The title 'Schlager' is my tribute to the hit. Yes, I stand by the fact that the hit is my passion. Especially because the hit sounds different today and has a different status than ten years ago. ”Nowhere else would there be such deep gaps in people's heads as in Germany. She doesn't like that. She doesn't want to have to go without one in order to try something different. In the booklet accompanying the album, Mai makes the statement again that she wants to encourage people to think about hits with the album, to finally get rid of this "stupid" pigeonhole thinking . In another interview with the Bild newspaper, Mai stated that she was making her hit. Whoever doesn't like her after this album will never like me. When someone says: “It's not you at all” - “Wrong!”. That is exactly her. When the title was suggested to her, she first screamed no. Then she wondered why she was reacting that way. Even she subconsciously had very old images of the term 'Schlager' in her head. The old way of thinking in terms of drawers. This very negative reaction to the suggestion of one of her friends was the impetus to call the album "Schlager". However, you think it is wrong to categorically exclude this title because it is a hit. That's why they called the album that, among other things because they wanted to see how people react. Your own concern is to give the genre a chance. There are also many different facets and styles in rap, for example. She also wishes for the hit that not everyone is lumped together. The hit has also developed further. It is time to finally make a “cut”. Originally the word Schlager was the name for a song that hits you like a blow. So actually every number one hit is a hit. 'Hit' doesn't mean anything else in English. Actually, Ed Sheeran is also a hit. Mai herself advertised the album on her website with the quote “Put an end to pigeonhole thinking. No more prejudice. Time for SCHLAGER! ".

Booklet - "Dear future me"

Inside the CD there is a 10-page booklet in which you can find the contributors and a letter from Mai, which she addressed to her future self. In this she goes into, among other things, how the title "Schlager" came about, why one has to categorize music and that she "totally doesn't care" how it is classified. For the future, she sometimes wishes that her music would play normally on the radio and that the existing musical borders in Germany were broken. She also hopes that she was able to give people courage, strength and hope with her music. If she could teach only a small part in that would (already "Happy" English "for happy) make. She would also be happy if her “May team” had grown, but in the end she would be happiest if she had given people thought - if our fellow human beings were more relaxed and, above all, free of prejudice than they are today. Furthermore, she hopes that in the future actual positive qualities such as ambition, pride and courage will no longer be ridiculed and that people will treat each other more to one another. Furthermore, there is the quote "Seeing a strength in an alleged weakness - that is how I look at things" in this booklet again

Cooperation with Olexesh and media coverage

The collaboration between Mai and Olexesh is the first commercially successful collaboration between two musicians from rap and pop. Olexesh laid the foundation for the collaboration between the two. On June 5, 2018, he uploaded a video on his Instagram profile in which he asked Mai about a collaboration. On the same day, Mai accepted the offer, arguing that she wanted to "clear up this shitty stereotyped thinking anyway". Three days later, the two met in the studio and recorded the piece. Mai later said the following about working with Olexesh: She likes mixing genres . With Olexesh it was important to her how his attitude is. Both would have had a connection to each other immediately. Mai and Olexesh liked each other straight away, they just found each other. He is also "super polite", "super nice" and "completely correct". They were very surprised when they were in the studio, how creative and fast he works. He is completely free from all the “genre thinking”. That impressed her . This collaboration is the first duet from May to be released on phonogram. She has already sung numerous duets in television shows, such as Verdammt, Ich liebe 'Dich together with Helene Fischer in their own show in 2017. However, a duet with the participation of Mais has never been published to date.

Even with the single release, the piece caused a lot of media coverage. Some fans of Mai were horrified because they believed they had heard words like " cunt " or " puke " , among other things . The Berlin rapper Frauenarzt reported on Twitter , among others , who posted the following tweet: “With the new song by @vanessamai and @ olexesh64, I always understand“ Far too much, too much cunt in my head… ”#sorry”. However, the actual line is "Too many words in my head". In response to inquiries from the Bild newspaper , Mai made the following statement: “This is once again proof that you cannot always rely on your senses, your eyes and especially your hearing. Sometimes you just hear what you would like to hear. ”The German-language edition of the Huffingtonpost came to the decision that if you listened more closely, it would become clear: Mai actually sings“ too many words in my head ”. But the fact is: May actually pronounce the word more than harshly and many fans probably want to understand what they hear to believe, given the collaboration with "gangster rapper" Olexesh. But possibly the misleading song line is just the result of a clever PR scam , which, in view of 1.4 million views, came up within just four days.

Standard Edition

CD 1: studio album / CD 3: instrumentals

All the lyrics on the album are in German and are largely written by the authors Lukas Loules , Felix Gauder and Oli Nova. All pieces are new compositions. Thematically, Schlager works on the same topics as its predecessors. It's about love, enjoying life, getting up after setbacks, and true friendships. Musically, the songs move mainly in the area of Pop - Schlager . Electropop sounds can also be found in Fallschirm or Love Song ; with Wir 2 always 1 there is also a piece with rap parts on the album. Mai recorded the latter piece with the German-Ukrainian rapper Olexesh . It is the only guest contribution on Schlager and at the same time the first ever duet from May that was published on a phonogram. The song Love Song ( English for 'love song') was inspired by the song of the same name by the Jackson 5 , only the title is in English, the rest of the text is in German. In addition to the main song of Mai, the voices of Billy King (3 tracks) and Christoph Leis-Bendorff (1 track) can be heard in the background - as with the previous songs Für Dich und Regenbogen . For the first time since the second studio album Wachgeküsst Nova has been engaged again as a background singer (5 tracks). She received further vocal support from Suzi Derk (1 title), Katerina - and Lukas Loules (5 titles), Jenny Marsala (2 titles), the Silverjam members (2 titles) and Mariana Wagner (2 titles). The instrumentation was carried out by Gauder (keyboard), Gustmann (bass, keyboard, drums), Lukas Loules (bass, guitar, keyboard), Nova (keyboard), Paschold (keyboard), PzY (keyboard), Dirk Schlag (guitar) and Silverjam (Bass, guitar, keyboard, piano).

shop24direct Edition

The two bonus CDs of the "shop24direct Edition" are compilations. These include studio recordings, live recordings and remixed versions with titles from the last four years. There are no new compositions on the two CDs. Most of the tracks come from the previous studio album Regenbogen (15 tracks), followed by its predecessor Für Dich (13 tracks). Three tracks from the second studio album Wachgeküsst made it onto the two CDs, none of the tracks from Mai's debut album Endlosliebbt is represented. For the remix recordings, it was decided to use a selection of well-known DJs such as the two Saxon DJ duos Anstandslos & Durchgeknallt and Stereoact . The remix Wachgeküsst (acoustic mix) comes from the single of the same name and was later released as a B-side . The three live recordings from Berlin come from Main's second live album Für Dich - Live from Berlin . All live recordings that were made during the Rainbow Tour were officially released on a corn record for the first time.

To date, no single of hers has been able to rank higher in Germany, so the single replaces its predecessor Ich derb für dich (highest ranking: 35). The music video shot by Ruben Kempter and Jan Wittekindt was also a success and cracked the one million mark within a few days and has so far had over 2.3 million views on YouTube (as of July 2018).

No way

With Niemals , the second and so far last official single from the album was released three months after the album was released on November 23, 2018. In contrast to its predecessor, the single missed a chart entry into the official hit parade, but Never managed to top the chart for four weeks place the conservative pop airplay charts . In addition, the single - in two different versions - was featured in the German iTunes daily reports for several days. Overall, the single was able to place itself in the daily evaluations on 14 days and reached its highest chart listing at position 26 on November 24, 2018. A music video was not made. On the black and white cover picture for Single you can see Mai emerging from the water with no upper body . She covers her breasts with her hands while she splashes water into the air from her mouth. The picture was taken during Mai's honeymoon in the Maldives and was shot by her husband. Mai first published the picture on her Instagram profile on November 12, 2018.

Reviews

  • Dani Fromm from the online magazine laut.de only awarded one of a possible five points for the album. Among other things, he is of the opinion that the press release pours such a torrent of redundant phrases that the desperate hope can almost be grasped with hands. Mai is therefore an artist who is always looking for the "borderline" and has "resisted" "to put in a musical drawer". "Barriers and fences are not for her", which is why she now wants to have "cleared away beams, cut fences, blown drawers". Schlager would open up "to musical symbiosis ", all those involved are "free from genre thinking", the word "bandwidth" falls somewhere. Mai delivers exactly what the title of her album promises, without any charm , joke or even the smallest content- related or musical frills : “A deadly boring affair”. This truth would not promote sales, so the promoters prefer to " rant " about the "unusual power of their voice". Although that would be unusually true, a singer with a vocal range of what feels like a ¾ octave , zero vocal volume and no expression in her performance is actually not met every day. On the subject of bandwidth, May always sound the same.
"If we see each other again, I'll never let you go again" "House-mouse" rhymes with the opening number, in order to fiddle around with the "most worn-out images of the metaphor sales". Summer, sun, beach and sea would come in an inexpensive double pack with a sky-blue sky at all times. Except it was just tragic display, it was raining, of course. In the magic land there is the “rusty emotional rollercoaster”, it is flown high up to the clouds; and crashed deep immediately afterwards - but always play it safe, always nice with a parachute . "Never woke up alone again / You are no longer lying next to me / You make me stronger every day." Who should look through this on-off chaos? The logic has long since gone overboard in view of the slanted position of the images.
Also that the “pigtailed 90s-four-quarter-carousel-brakes-thumping beats”, accompanied from front to back by “cheap echo effects, keyboards from the big disco hell”, here a guitar and there a snap of the fingers, are about new contemporary sound, about the sound should act in our day, Fromm would hardly have been noticed by himself. He would have otherwise taken it for a somewhat outrageous infusion of Den Harrows Don't Break My Heart or similar “ scary things ”. If the “very special story that absolutely has to be told” is correct, it provides nothing more than evidence of how effortlessly and inconclusive a travel budget can be wasted. Mai won't turn into Michael Jackson and her bland, unimaginative ditty won't turn into a thriller , just because the same mixer was used for the recordings .
Twelve "boring tracks" would have been enough. The second CD brings the "greatest songs of their last years and also from their ' cloud-free ' time". As if someone had a chance to lose track of Mai's sprawling discography (4 albums). "All songs are newly sung and embedded in a new, contemporary sound". It would take about as much imagination to introduce yourself as it would to put together this list of tracks. The lyrics would speak of eternal love, but that only lasts until the next song. What wants to be “wild” and “crazy” is thrown away in honest “clerks-all-inclusive vacation dreams”, in which the great freedom would be to stroll along the beach in jeans and a T-shirt. "You take me by the hand, I'll show you the magic land ." Purs Adventure Land had more exciting things to offer and Hartmut Engler perhaps wore a more questionable hairstyle for a walk, but certainly had a much larger vocabulary. At the end of the album, the omnipresent suns, clouds and stars, beaches and colors, together with the cotton candy, pour out of your ears.
Olexesh brings the only tiny touch of variety with him, even if the story of its origins is presented again as a single “cliché polonaise”. It is indicative of how stupid you obviously consider your customers to be if you think someone could really believe that the contact process was exactly the same and that it was not arranged by business-minded marketing people behind the scenes. "He's also super polite and super nice and very correct / I was very surprised when we were in the studio, how creative and fast he worked." A rapper can be creative, work determined and be nice, polite and correct , really surprising! It's good that Mai knows no genre boundaries. Otherwise, in the end, she would still notice how deeply trapped in pigeonhole thinking she was. laut.de titled hit one of the 30 worst albums of the year 2018th
  • Patrick Kollmer from the German-language music portal schlagerplanet.com described Schlager as one of the most important albums of the year. The album expands the genre with many new influences, styles and sounds, some of which were mixed in this way for the first time. On the other hand, Mai would remain true to themes: it's about love, enjoying life, getting up after setbacks and true friendships. Musically she dares a lot and will definitely change the hit with it. The essence of hit music has always been to take up new styles, such as disco and funk in the 1970s, “keyboard pop” in the 1980s and “guitar rock” in the 1990s. May make sure that the hit keeps its changeability and put the stamp of our time on it.
  • Volker Probst from the German news channel n-tv comes to the decision that what can be heard on Schlager is simply not particularly good music. There are 24 slack songs. Neither in terms of the songs themselves nor in terms of their arrangements . Not to mention the texts of the brand "You are my summer, it doesn't get much hotter anymore, I want to burn myself on you, without sun protection by the sea, oh oh oh". It is particularly noticeable in the new versions of the old “May songs” on the second CD, which in the end were simply immersed in a bath of “ synthie mash” and hosed down lukewarm. Innovation is zero. If you want to define hits , that's exactly what defines the genre to a certain extent. This genre is characterized by “the simplest musical structures and trivial texts that appeal to the listener's desire for harmony and happiness”, says Wikipedia, for example. Nothing bad. The fact that many people don't want anything else when they turn up their loudspeakers is proven not least by the success that the “sympathetic” Mai has been celebrating for several years. But you can call their sound a hit.
  • The German-language website vip.de is of the opinion that the intention that Mai is pursuing with Schlager can be rated positively: “No more drawers. No more restrictions. Long live artistic freedom. ”So much for the theory. The practice looks different again. May have the wow factor with their first single We always two one yet had and spontaneous collaboration with rapper Olexesh on their side, but with a new album they covet but then with too big surprises. So the opener Wiedersehen couldn't hide the fact that Mai can't quite break away from her Schlager roots. That wouldn't be too bad, because, to anticipate this, the bottom line is that the bottom line is a cleanly produced, “modern pop album” with the genre-typical “Reim dich oder ich eat dich” lyrics ( Mein Sommer ). Everything is always nice to dance to ( parachute ) and the "electric pump" is broken up here and there by more airy songs ( how it used to be ). What Mai does, she does well. Fans of the first hour should at least not feel too offended. From time to time, however, Mai flashes her will to look completely outside the box. The number Glücksbringer surprised with a little introduction to the chorus, probably borrowed from dubstep , but then poured out into a “ schema F refrain”. The piece in particular is a good example of how Mai doesn't quite dare to shake off all expectations and really break free. But maybe she doesn't want to. Schlager is definitely not the big break that your marketing department wants to sell us.
