Schlager is the fifth studio album of the German pop - pop - singer Vanessa May .
Creation and artwork
- Emergence
Most of the tracks on the album were written by the German composer, songwriter and music producer Lukas Loules (formerly Lukas Hilbert), and he is the author of seven of 13 new tracks. Loules already had two author participations on the previous Rainbow . With six authors each, Felix Gauder and Oli Nova wrote the second-most titles. The two were among the main authors of the Wolkenfrei debut album Endlos in love and Mai's second studio album Wachgeküsst . The German hip-hop producer Choukri Gustmann wrote five titles, Katerina Loules - Lukas Loules' wife - four titles and Laura Kloos three titles. Katerina Loules already wrote the song Most Beautiful Moment on the previous song . Gustmann and Kloos first worked together with Mai. Furthermore, 16 other authors wrote occasional pieces, including Sera Finale , Olexij Kosarev ( Olexesh ), the Austrian music producers Hubert Molander and Emanuel Treu and the internationally successful Dutch DJ duo Showtek (Sjoerd- and Wouter Janssen).
Most of the new titles were produced by Gauder, he is a total of six productions. Gustmann and Lukas Loules follow with five productions each. Two productions come from the German producer trio Silverjam (consisting of: Patrick Benzner, Serhat Sakin, Dave Roth) and ultimately one from PzY. Vanessa Mai acted as executive producer . The mastering took place under the direction of Lex Barkey from Berlin. The album was mixed by Gauder (5 tracks), Gustmann (5 tracks) and two tracks by the German producer trio Madizin (Silverjam). In addition to Lukas Loules, Nova, Moritz Paschold, PzY and the Titans, the three parties were also responsible for the programming.
Schlager was published under the music label Ariola (a sub-label of Sony Music Entertainment ), by afm Publishing (13 tracks), ChampionsLeak Edition, Hanseatic Warner / Chappell , onetwofour Publishing and Shedler Music (5 tracks), Warner / Chappell (3 tracks) as well published by nine other music publishers and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment. The recordings were made in the jojo music studios in Stuttgart , the House of Music Studios in Winterbach , the Lap Top Studios and Paramount Studio C in Los Angeles , the Madizin Studios in Hamburg and in the Zum golden Bunker in Düsseldorf .

On the front of the album cover - next to the artist name and song title - Mais's mouth can be seen. It shows her slightly open mouth up close, with two fingers on her lower lip . The fingers press the lower lip down so that the inside of it can be seen. The inside of the lower lip is adorned with the words "Schlager", which gives the appearance of being tattooed. The stage name is between the upper lip and nose. When asked whether the tattoo was real, Mai always replied with the statement that it would remain a secret. On the back of the album cover, Mai can be seen naked in a sea of flowers, only her intimate parts are covered by flowers. The back cover was presented for the first time on the day the album was released. Inside the CD there is a picture of corn that also shows it without a shell from the head to just above the breasts, against a blue background. Her face and upper body are adorned with various "Schlager" lettering. The photographs are all by Marius Sperlich. Before the official cover was published, an alternative cover image was used for promotion. This only shows the artist name and the song title against a pink background.
Publication and promotion

Schlager was first published on August 3, 2018 as CD and download. Mai first advertised the album on May 18, 2018 on Instagram. The conventional version of the album was released as a double album and includes a sound carrier with new studio recordings as well as a sound carrier with best-of recordings from May and her former band project Wolkenfrei . Both CDs contain twelve recordings each, so that the album has a total of 24 tracks. In the digital versions, the first sound carrier contains 13 tracks. These are expanded to include the piece of fire and ice . As for the physical forms, the piece can be found on the “Megamix” bonus CD. In addition to the conventional album version, a “Premium Fanbox”, an “Ultra Deluxe Fanbox” and a “Magazin Edition” were released at the same time. In addition, an exclusive version appeared in the shop24direct online shop three days later .

As in previous years, the company was able to win over RTL Television as a media partner , who marketed the album under their Music for Millions label and ran commercials on various RTL Group channels . In order to further promote the album, there were joint live appearances by Mai and Olexesh - during prime time - with Wir 2 always 1 at Schlag den Henssler on ProSieben and at the Starnacht am Wörthersee 2018 of the Austrian broadcasting company . - Separation from Bohlen in the run-up to album production
About two months after the release of the previous studio album Regenbogen , Bohlen and Mai separated. It is unclear who the breakup came from. Both sides stated in various interviews that they wanted the separation. After many gazettes spoke of a “mud fight”, May made the following statement on Instagram on November 7, 2017 : “Dieter Bohlen. I know some of you don't like him, but if I may say it a little strange: We owe it to Dieter that we all have each other today and for the next few years. He has supported us tremendously over the past few years and for me he is a very big player in German music! And now some media come along and want to see a "mud shaft" between us. But there is no such thing! Only the following is true: Dieter will not contribute any songs for my new album in 2018. Above all, this is a decision for new impulses and maybe a bit for something tried and tested. But definitely not against Dieter. ”In an interview with Closer, Bohlen gave the following reasons for the separation: He had the idea that the two would have to make more commercial hits. Mai had a different idea. Cooperation would then be of little use because it should be fun. But he still wishes her all the best. Mai also said on Instagram that a new journey has already started. - Album title and "No more pigeonholed thinking"
In an interview with the Bild newspaper , in which Mai was asked how the album title “Schlager” came about, she replied as follows: “The title 'Schlager' is my tribute to the hit. Yes, I stand by the fact that the hit is my passion. Especially because the hit sounds different today and has a different status than ten years ago. ”Nowhere else would there be such deep gaps in people's heads as in Germany. She doesn't like that. She doesn't want to have to go without one in order to try something different. In the booklet accompanying the album, Mai makes the statement again that she wants to encourage people to think about hits with the album, to finally get rid of this "stupid" pigeonhole thinking . In another interview with the Bild newspaper, Mai stated that she was making her hit. Whoever doesn't like her after this album will never like me. When someone says: “It's not you at all” - “Wrong!”. That is exactly her. When the title was suggested to her, she first screamed no. Then she wondered why she was reacting that way. Even she subconsciously had very old images of the term 'Schlager' in her head. The old way of thinking in terms of drawers. This very negative reaction to the suggestion of one of her friends was the impetus to call the album "Schlager". However, you think it is wrong to categorically exclude this title because it is a hit. That's why they called the album that, among other things because they wanted to see how people react. Your own concern is to give the genre a chance. There are also many different facets and styles in rap, for example. She also wishes for the hit that not everyone is lumped together. The hit has also developed further. It is time to finally make a “cut”. Originally the word Schlager was the name for a song that hits you like a blow. So actually every number one hit is a hit. - Booklet - "Dear future me"
Inside the CD there is a 10-page booklet in which you can find the contributors and a letter from Mai, which she addressed to her future self. In this she goes into, among other things, how the title "Schlager" came about, why one has to categorize music and that she "totally doesn't care" how it is classified. For the future, she sometimes wishes that her music would play normally on the radio and that the existing musical borders in Germany were broken. She also hopes that she was able to give people courage, strength and hope with her music. If she could teach only a small part in that would (already "Happy" English "for happy) make. The collaboration between Mai and Olexesh is the first commercially successful collaboration between two musicians from rap and pop. Olexesh laid the foundation for the collaboration between the two. On June 5, 2018, he uploaded a video on his Instagram profile in which he asked Mai about a collaboration. On the same day, Mai accepted the offer, arguing that she wanted to "clear up this shitty stereotyped thinking anyway". Three days later, the two met in the studio and recorded the piece. Even with the single release, the piece caused a lot of media coverage. Some fans of Mai were horrified because they believed they had heard words like " cunt " or " puke " , among other things . All the lyrics on the album are in German and are largely written by the authors Lukas Loules , Felix Gauder and Oli Nova. All pieces are new compositions. Thematically, Schlager works on the same topics as its predecessors. It's about love, enjoying life, getting up after setbacks, and true friendships. Musically, the songs move mainly in the area of Pop - Schlager . Electropop sounds can also be found in Fallschirm or Love Song ; with Wir 2 always 1 there is also a piece with rap parts on the album. Mai recorded the latter piece with the German-Ukrainian rapper Olexesh . It is the only guest contribution on Schlager and at the same time the first ever duet from May that was published on a phonogram. The song Love Song ( English for 'love song') was inspired by the song of the same name by the Jackson 5 , only the title is in English, the rest of the text is in German. - Promo singles
In order to promote the new album Schlager , Mai first published two promo singles before the first official single was released with Wir 2 always 1 . With My summer the first of the two promo singles released on May 2, 2018 as a single download. Four weeks later, Love Song, the second promo single was released on June 1, 2018. The song, inspired by the Jackson 5 of the same name , was only available as a single download , like its predecessor Mein Sommer . Neither record was able to enter the official German single Top 100 . Mein Sommer was able to place itself in the iTunes daily evaluations in Germany for four days and reached its highest price on May 19, 2018 at position 49.
We 2 always 1
After the two previous promo singles Mein Sommer and Love Song , Wir 2 immer 1 was the first official single from the album. The collaboration with the German-Ukrainian rapper Olexesh first appeared as a single on July 6, 2018 and includes borrowings from pop, hit and rap. The single reached position 33 in the official Top 100 single in Germany. In the official midweek charts , the single initially reached position 27. Furthermore, Wir 2 was always 1 in position eleven in the official download single charts , in position 15 in the top 15 German-speaking singles and on position 57 of the Top 100 Music Streaming in Germany. For Mai as an interpreter, Wir 2 is always 1 the third chart success in the German single charts. To date, no single of hers has been able to rank higher in Germany, so the single replaces its predecessor Ich derb für dich (highest ranking: 35). The music video shot by Ruben Kempter and Jan Wittekindt was also a success and cracked the one million mark within a few days and has so far had over 2.3 million views on YouTube (as of July 2018).

With Niemals , the second and so far last official single from the album was released three months after the album was released on November 23, 2018. - Dani Fromm from the online magazine laut.de only awarded one of a possible five points for the album. Among other things, he is of the opinion that the press release pours such a torrent of redundant phrases that the desperate hope can almost be grasped with hands. Mai is therefore an artist who is always looking for the "borderline" and has "resisted" "to put in a musical drawer". Although that would be unusually true, a singer with a vocal range of what feels like a ¾ octave , zero vocal volume and no expression in her performance is actually not met every day. - "If we see each other again, I'll never let you go again" "House-mouse" rhymes with the opening number, in order to fiddle around with the "most worn-out images of the metaphor sales". - Patrick Kollmer from the German-language music portal schlagerplanet.com described Schlager as one of the most important albums of the year. The album expands the genre with many new influences, styles and sounds, some of which were mixed in this way for the first time. - The German-language website vip.de is of the opinion that the intention that Mai is pursuing with Schlager can be rated positively: “No more drawers. No more restrictions. Long live artistic freedom. ”So much for the theory. The practice looks different again.
