Engler was in a relationship with the Swiss singer Nubya from May 2003 to early May 2008 . He has a brother who works as a teacher and a sister, Ute Nagel, who used to support Pur as a background singer and who now appears with the gospel formation The Union . Hartmut Engler has two sons from his second marriage to Claudia. He lives in Bietigheim-Bissingen and on Mallorca.

He also gave his voice to the main male character Garret in the cartoon The Magic Sword - The Legend of Camelot . In 2011 he published his autobiography Engler PUR .
Since 2014, Engler has been the patron of Herzenssache , the children's aid campaign run by SWR , SR and two Sparda banks .
