Forever -

Forever the sixth is studio album of the German pop schlager - singer Vanessa May .

Creation and artwork

Emergence

Most of the tracks on the album were written by Vanessa Mai herself, she co-wrote a total of nine of the 13 new compositions. It is the first album on which Mai is involved as a writer, previously she only co-wrote the two tracks I Can't Sleep Tonight and Never Again for her fourth studio album Rainbow . The German DJ and music producer Matthias Zürkler ( B-Case ) provides the second-most titles on the album with seven author participations, most of them as an external author. The German brothers Christoph and Daniel Cronauer co-wrote six songs on the album. The songwriters and composers Mark Hiller, Jules Kalmbacher, the producer trio Silverjam (consisting of: Patrick Benzner, Dave Roth and Serhat Sakin) and Stefan Ultsch were each responsible for two new compositions. In addition, 19 other authors wrote individual pieces, including well-known artists such as Sera Finale , the Junkx production team (consisting of: Dennis Bierbrodt, Stefan Dabruck , Jürgen Dohr and Guido Kramer), Lukas Loules , Xavier Naidoo , Nico Santos and the DJ duo Stereoact (consisting of: Rico Einenkel and Sebastian Seidel). Some of them also act as guest singers on the album. Sera Finale and Silverjam already wrote a grief for Maize's previous album Schlager with Stronger . After the albums Schlager , Regenbogen and the cover recording for Für dich - on the album of the same name - Loules worked for the fourth time as an author on a studio album from May.

Most of the new compositions were produced by Zürkler, who also worked as a producer on all of the authors' participations (7 pieces). The same applies to Daniel Cronauer, who thus makes six productions of the album. The German producer Jules Kalmbacher and the producer trio Silverjam each produced two pieces on the album. Furthermore, Daniel Deimann, Junkx , Dominik Köhl, Stereoact and Joshua Stolten each produced a title. With the exception of two songs, the mastering took place under the direction of the Berlin and Munich collective around Truva Music. The piece My greatest weakness was mastered by the Berlin sound engineer Lex Barkey , the song Beste Version by the Düsseldorf-based Michael Schwabe. Truva Music was also responsible for most of the mixing. Two new compositions were mixed by the producer trio Silverjam and one by Loules. Zürkler was responsible for the instrumentation of most of the tracks; he recorded the music for six songs. The second most recordings were made by Christoph Cronauer, who recorded five tracks. Kalmbacher and Silverjam were hired for two instrumentations. Furthermore, Michael Geldreich, Junkx, Loules and Felix Schüler occasionally played instruments.

Artwork

On the front cover of the album - next to the artist name and album title - the face of Mai can be seen. It shows her from behind as she looks over her shoulder towards the viewer on the right. The entire cover picture is kept in reddish tones, with the exception of the artist information, which is placed in white lettering in the upper left corner. The album title can be found in the background or transparently in several lines over the entire cover image. As with Für Dich und Regenbogen , the artwork and the photographs of the cover as well as the enclosed 18-page booklet come from Roland Reinsberg and Sandra Ludewig. Mai first presented the front cover on November 3, 2019 on social media .

The first release of Forever took place on January 24th, 2020 as CD, download and streaming, by the music label Ariola (a sub-label of Sony Music Entertainment ). The album has been available for pre-order since October 18, 2019. The songs were sold by AFM Publishing and Vanessa Mai Edition (9 tracks each), Budde Music (7 tracks), Sony / ATV Music Publishing (3 tracks), Benzer Publishing , den Ellenberger Verlag, Emmaspark Music and Madizin Music Publishing (2 titles each) as well as ten other music publishers . Distribution is carried out by Sony Music Entertainment. The recordings were made in the House of Music Studios in Winterbach , the Jules Kamlbacher Studio in Mannheim and the Hamburg Madizin Studios. The conventional version of the album includes 13 new compositions as well as four remix versions and a cover version. Forever comes to a track list of 18 songs. The final and complete track list was first announced on December 27, 2019. A limited fan box was released at the same time as the regular album. In addition to the album, this includes a pop socket, a gym bag , an XXL poster , a hand-signed greeting card , a button set and a hardcover book with handwritten song texts and notes. Initially, the plan was to release three configurations of the album: Standard CD (13 tracks), Premium Edition (18 tracks) and Fanbox ( merchandise + premium CD). The reason that the album was only released in a physical form was that every fan should be able to hear all the songs.

To promote the album, there were two appearances in the ZDF television garden . On June 10, 2019 she presented her single Spiegel, Spiegel , and on July 19, 2020 the singles Highlight and Venice (Love Is in the Air) . She also appeared on January 24, 2020 with Spiegel, Spiegel in the ARD morning magazine . In addition, Mai, together with Stereoact , performed a prime-time live appearance on the Sat.1 show Catch! The German Catching Championship on January 3, 2020. One day after the album was released, ARD broadcast the feature film Nur mit Dir , in which Mai made her film debut alongside Axel Prahl . At the end of the film she sings the song Spiegel, Spiegel . On July 26, 2020, she performed with Highlight and Venice (Love Is in the Air) on the ARD show Always on Sundays .

background information

The actual release date of Forever was planned for October 2019, but this had to be postponed due to filming ( only with you ) and for personal reasons. An arena tour was actually planned for autumn 2019, the tickets for which were already on sale, but which was canceled. Mai explained her personal problems by saying that the pressure to succeed had "almost broken" her. She felt controlled by others, lost her faith in herself and started to compare herself to other singers. Mai admitted that she had lost her initial lightheartedness. She had people around her who made her feel ashamed of what she was doing so far. She experienced and achieved great things, but could no longer enjoy them. Because of this, she took some time off and postponed her ongoing projects. In another interview, Mai revealed that she actually had a finished album, but was not satisfied with it and had discarded everything. From the original work only the piece Best Version on Forever made it.

content

All the lyrics on the album are written in German and mostly come from Mai himself as well as the authors Chris Cronauer, Daniel Cronauer or Matthias Zürkler as well as 25 other composers and songwriters who composed and wrote occasional titles. According to Mai, the album title "Forever" was a "bow to her fans". Musically, the songs are mainly in the field of electro pop and pop hits . Thematically, the songs deal mainly with love. Some song titles such as Blue ( English for 'blue'), Forever ( English for 'Forever'), Highlight ( English for 'climax') and Love Is in the Air ( English for 'love is in the air') have an English language Names, but the texts are written in German, only the individual words or parts of sentences are in English. Furthermore, the texts often contain Anglicisms or English phrases such as "Baby, Please Don't Go" ( English for 'Liebling , Please Don't Go ') in Blue , "Candlelights" ( English for 'Candlelight') in Venice (Love Is in the Air) or "Deeper than the Ocean" ( English for 'Deeper than the Ocean') in Have you ever reflected. The album consists of 18 songs, with only 13 new studio recordings included. Furthermore, Forever includes four remix versions of titles that come from the studio version of Forever and the song Spiegel, Spiegel , which actually also comes from the album, in a duet with the German actor Axel Prahl . Other guest appearances on the album were made by Xavier Naidoo ( Have you ever ) and Stereoact ( Yes No Maybe ). In addition to the main song of May, the voices of Lukas Loules and his wife Tryna Loules , the Silverjam members and Mariana Wagner are in the background in individual songs .

Teaser Club Show Tour

After the originally planned arena tour was canceled, Mai decided to play a small club tour first. This so-called teaser clubshow tour extended over a period of four days from November 25th to November 28th, 2019 and took her with her accompanying band to Hamburg , Cologne , Munich and Berlin . The sold-out venues offered space for around 500 spectators. Official ticket sales began on September 27, 2019, and fans who subscribed to the May newsletter were able to get tickets three days in advance via the “fan presale”. During the tour, Mai and her accompanying band presented 18 different titles. The repertoire consisted mainly of a musical mixture of electro pop , pop and hit songs , with some acoustic performances in the middle of the concerts. More than a third of the setlist consisted of tracks from Forever and other tracks from all of the older studio albums. In the middle of the concerts Mai presented an acoustic set consisting of three titles.

Single releases

Best version

The first single from Forever was released - seven months before the album was released - the single for Beste Version . The single was released on May 17, 2019 as a single download and streaming. The face of Mai can be seen on the front cover. This is, after Nie wieder , the second single in Mai's career in which she herself worked as a writer. On the day the single was released, the accompanying music video also premiered on YouTube . The video shows the mornings of different people who wake up alone and don't seem to be perfect. While they put their flaws in the foreground at the beginning , they forget about them towards the end of the video and start dancing. Mai himself takes on one of the roles in the video. The video has a total length of 3:24 minutes and was shot by Katja Kuhl. Best version missed entry into the official single charts, but was able to place itself in the German iTunes daily evaluations for four days and reached position 22, its highest chart listing on the day of its publication.

Venice (Love Is in the Air)

With Venice (Love Is in the Air) , the second advance single from the album was released on October 18 of 2019. Like its predecessor, the single was also released as a single download and streaming. Contrary to what the title might suggest, this is not an English language song, but one in German . Only in the chorus does the piece contain the repetitive line “Love Is in the Air” ( English for “love is in the air”). On the front cover of the single you can see Mai on a promenade in Venice. The music video appeared on the day the single was released. During this month, Mai can be seen at various locations in Venice . The single missed entry into the official single charts, but was at the top of the German conservative pop airplay charts for two weeks . In addition, the single was placed in the German iTunes daily evaluations on 16 days and reached position 13, its highest chart price on the day of its release.

Front cover for "Yes No Maybe"

On October 25, 2019, Ja No Maybe, the third single from Forever was released . This is a collaboration with the German DJ duo Stereoact . Although it is a guest post from Mai, the piece also appeared on her album. Like its two predecessors, this release also initially appeared as a single download and streaming. On December 6, 2019, a remix EP with five remix recordings was released for download and streaming. On the front cover of the single track only the song title and the performers can be seen in black letters on a white background. The words “yes”, “no” and “maybe” are placed one below the other with boxes to tick, with the cross placed next to “yes”. The Remix EP contains the same cover, only that the colors have been swapped so that the background is black and the inscription white. In the accompanying music video, Mai can be seen, who cannot decide what she wants during her everyday life. The video shows her filling up, at the bakery, in an ice cream parlor or in a bar, among other things . She is always served by the two Stereoact members. The total length of the video is 2:28 minutes, directed by Marvin Ströter. This single also failed to make it into the official single charts, but was also able to place itself in the German iTunes daily evaluations and reached its highest chart listing on October 31, 2019 at position eight within eight days.

Have you ever
Front cover to "Have you ever"

When have you ever is the fourth single from the album. The single was created in collaboration with the German soul - and R & B - singer Xavier Naidoo , like the other singles and 2019. In published these as a single download and streaming on 29 November the rotgehaltenen front cover of the single, only the song title and the artist can be found. The song title can be found in the background, in red, several times over the entire cover. The artist information is in the foreground, in the middle, in white letters. While the title is shown in large letters, the artist information is kept relatively small. The artwork is based on that of the album. The video shows the wedding between May and her real husband Andreas Ferber, wearing her original wedding dress . Naidoo takes on the role of best man . The recordings were made at Walkershofen Castle in Simmershofen-Walkershofen . The total length is 2:55 minutes, directed by Mikis Fontagnier. Like all three predecessors, Did you ever miss entry into the official charts, but was also able to place itself in the German iTunes daily evaluations for seven days and reached its highest chart listing at position 23 one day after its publication on November 30, 2019.

Mirror, mirror

The fifth and last pre- single , Spiegel, Spiegel was released on January 10, 2020. Like all previous single releases from the album, this was also released as a single download and streaming. On the front cover of the single you can see - in addition to artist name and song title - Mai during a concert from her teaser club shows . The cover image and the song title are reflected, only the artist information is not reflected. In terms of content, Mai looks back on difficult times and the inner turmoil that went with them. This was also positively reviewed by well-known music critics such as the German-language online magazine laut.de. The piece was originally written as the soundtrack for the movie Just With You . On the NDR Talk Show , she revealed to Barbara Schöneberger that she touched the piece so much, spoke from her soul and experienced the topic herself, that she wanted it on the album. An official music video was not shot, Mai only published an acoustic video for Spiegel, Spiegel on January 21, 2020, which was made during the “My Heart Beats Schlager Session”. The single missed all the charts.

Masterpiece

After five official single releases had been released, Mai released a video single with Maisterwerk , which was released on January 31, 2020 on YouTube. The music video contains recordings that were made during the teaser club show tour . It shows backstage recordings as well as recordings during the concerts as well as fan recordings before and after the concerts. The total length of the video is 2:54 minutes. Directed by Florian Kaiser. In terms of content, the piece is a thank you from May to her fans.

Highlight

On May 16, 2020, Mai released Highlight, the last single from the album to date. Like its predecessor, the single was also released as a single download and streaming. Only Mai can be seen on the front cover, sitting on the edge of a table and looking at the viewer. However, the single version differs from the album version in that it contains a Croatian-language text part. On the day the single was released, Mai entered the newly initiated Free European Song Contest with this version . When she participated, she represented Croatia , the country her father comes from. In the end, she finished ninth out of 16 places with 55 points and had to admit defeat to the winner Nico Santos with Like I Love You , Ilse DeLange ( Changes ) or Max Mutzke as an astronaut ( [back to the moon] ). Mai got twelve points from Bulgaria once during the scoring, while Denmark, Ireland, Israel and the Moon did not get any points. The team from the German-language website schlager.de described the outfit during the performance as “optically enchanting”, but the singing as “comparatively poor”. In contrast to all previous singles, no music video was made for this.

Reviews

Toni Hennig from the German-language online magazine laut.de rated the album with only one out of five stars and is of the opinion that the album sounds like all its predecessors. Mai remains true to her motto “My heart beats Schlager” on this album, but complies with the “mainstream zeitgeist”. The music often runs a straight " 44 -bummbeat" out of the lowest catacombs of après-ski hell. If that wasn't in the foreground, electro , Balearic House and Dancehall tunes would just do it, all of which sound equally generic and lifeless. That could often be transferred to her thin little voice, which is laden with effects . This has neither volume nor expression and charisma. Hennig described the song lyrics, which are mostly about love, as an "unbearable ordeal", which is due, among other things, to many "dear clichés ", " banality " and " dime romance ". Some of the lyrics would also follow a “Gaga lyric”. Hennig also has little positive left for the guest singers. He described Naidoo's singing as "howling", which causes stomach cramps. Due to the self-reflection in terms of content , Hennig highlighted the piece Spiegel, Spiegel as the only bright spot. The editors rated the album as one of the "worst albums of the half year".

Florian Reiter from the German-language online news magazine Focus Online described Forever as a straightforwardly produced mixture of pop and hit songs, with borrowings from the electro and hip-hop world. In terms of content, the cheerful and relaxed album deals mainly with positive topics such as happiness or love, possibly the best album of May so far, but unfortunately she is not interested in a “phoenix from the ashes” story full of insights into soul life.

Patrick Kollmer from schlagerplanet.com described the new titles as clearly “poppier” and “danceable”. Mai stood out musically "noticeably" from the hit, but she did not make a complete change of style. The new material would have fit on one of the earlier albums.

Charts and chart placements

Forever reached position two in the official album charts in Germany and was in the top 10 for one week and in the top 100 for eight weeks. After May with the last two studio albums rainbow and hit the chart peak reached her, she had to time the German Dark rock - band Mono Inc. beaten. In the German hit charts as well as the German-language album charts , Forever always reached the top position. The album also reached position four on the German download charts . In Austria the album reached position five and stayed in the top 10 for one week and in the charts for three weeks. In Switzerland , Forever Me reached its highest chart price at position seven and was also in the top 10 for one week and in the chart for four weeks.

Mai reached the album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the sixth time with Forever . It is her fifth top 10 success in Germany and Austria and her fourth in Switzerland. In the German hit charts she reached the top of the chart for the fifth time.
