The Metropol Theater Bremen (formerly Musical Theater Bremen ) is a venue in Bremen . There are now various kinds of events there, from musicals to RTL's super talent or concerts by well-known artists.

room

The hall , which has 1451 seats, is the largest self-supporting interior space in Bremen. The seats are divided into the stalls, 1st tier, 2nd tier and ten boxes. The hall is equipped with 39 double-mirrored scatter lights that illuminate the peep-box stage .

The foyer has been generously designed over three floors. In addition to the cloakroom and an advance booking office that also sells merchandising items, there are bistros, bars, a café and a restaurant . One of the largest open stairs in Germany leads from the foyer to the individual hall entrances.

history

When the central pool was demolished at the end of the 1980s and a market hall built there and subsequently a large disco were unsuccessful, the city intended to build a theater for operas or musicals on the vacated area in the suburb of the station . Several sponsors got in touch and agreed to co-finance such a project at this point. After three years of planning and construction, the Musical Theater Bremen on Richtweg was opened in 1999 according to the plans of the architect Harald Deilmann with the musical Jekyll & Hyde under the musical direction of Koen Schoots . Those responsible had found a market niche in the region, so that the theater was initially successful. In the first six months, all Jekyll & Hyde performances were sold out. The ensemble received consistently good reviews.

insolvency

After about one and a half years of operation, however, the first problems arose. The number of viewers fell noticeably and fell short of expectations. As a result, some major sponsors dropped out, which left the theater in financial distress. Three months later, management drew a line and discontinued the performance. Another, more popular musical should follow.

This then happened in the form of the classic hair . But the quarrels had cast a shadow over the theater's initial splendor. After half a year of Hair with moderate ticket sales and bad reviews, the Musical Theater Bremen had to file for bankruptcy. The management resigned in unison.

New beginning

The theater stayed closed for about three months until new investors entered. As a new strategy, they introduced no longer just performing one main musical, but - as in conventional theaters - only performing individual pieces for about half a year and then playing a new one. In 2005 there was a brief debate as to whether a foreign consortium should take over the musical theater. An offer was made, but due to the success and popularity of the performances and the uncertainty of what would happen after the takeover, the Senator of Culture declined the offer. The theater is one of the most popular cultural institutions in the country. Yet it does not break even. For the 2006 financial year, the operator, the city's own Hanseatic Event Company, reported an occupancy rate of 52% and a minus of 200,000 euros.

Since April 1st, 2011 the theater of Maik Klokow and his company group Mehr! Entertainment GmbH from Düsseldorf.

In 2015, the Musical Theater Bremen gained in importance again and was able to host concerts such as B. with Tom Jones , Kool & The Gang , Oleta Adams , Chris de Burgh or Anastacia with the Bremen Philharmonic . At the beginning of 2016, Rolf Specht, Managing Director of the Bremer Residenz Group, bought the land and building of the musical theater. Initially there were plans to demolish the building, then a new operator was found who received a contract for the next six years (until 2023). The theater has been operating under the name Metropol Theater Bremen since the beginning of 2018 .
