The auditorium has 99 seats.

history

The Schnürschuh Theater was founded in 1976 in Bremen by politically committed students and for many years was known primarily for its children's and youth productions. At first it appeared at various locations in Bremen, often close to the city center, such as in the Weserburg or in the Modernes in Bremen Neustadt. In addition, the theater group traveled all over Germany, for example with the play Püppchen , which was shown around 330 times. The play addresses sexual abuse in the family and the theater group wanted to break a taboo with it. Like many other in-house productions, the piece was written and staged in-house.

When the Jehovah's Witnesses gave up their location at Buntentorsteinweg 145 in Bremen Neustadt in 1994, the "traveling theater" settled down there and expanded the former Kingdom Hall into a small theater and event house. The corner building originally housed a small cinema .

In 2005 the Schnürschuh Theater got into a financial crisis when the city of Bremen suddenly wanted to completely cancel the promotion of the theater with public money. After massive protests, which came in particular from spectators and from the Bremen cultural scene, the city gave way. Since then, the theater has received funding as part of a public-private partnership, albeit with a significantly reduced annual amount, which in 2016 was 75,000 euros. In addition, the theater increasingly sought sponsors . Among other things, the Sparkasse Bremen is now one of the largest sponsors of the cultural institution.

In addition, the theater achieved a higher occupancy rate through an even more audience-oriented selection of plays. The actors and directors are increasingly relying on their own productions, which are no longer shown mainly as school performances in the morning, but increasingly also in the evening program. Every year a total of 16,000 to 17,500 visitors (as of 2016) come to the Schnürschuh Theater.

The sponsoring association of the Schnürschuh Theater is the non-profit association Kulturschmiede Bremen e. V. , whose 1st chairman is Jürgen Maly (as of 2018). Anja Hinrichs is the director of the theater, and Pascal Makowka is the artistic director (as of 2018).

Children's and youth theater

In the “Children's and Youth Theater” section, the Schnürschuh Theater stands for time-critical, socially critical, high-quality theater that takes place close to the reality of the youth. The target group are children and young people from five years of age from all levels of education. After each performance, the young people discuss the piece and its content. Through this direct dialog with the audience, the Schnürschuh Theater stands for theater close to the audience without fear of thresholds. The theater works closely with schools and presents titles that are read in schools. Through this direct contact with the target groups, the representation of characters that are close to the reality of life of the young people, and the selection of the pieces, it is possible to convey even difficult topics such as World War II, flight, National Socialism, right-wing radicalism, xenophobia, etc. . The Schnürschuh Theater supports the schools in their political and social education.

Theater for adults

In the existing section for adults, the theater presents pieces from the field of modern fiction and theatrical literature as well as cinema adaptations with a clear message that aim to encourage discussion of contemporary and socially critical topics. There is no experimental theater or boulevard theater on offer. The productions are characterized by close contact with the audience, everything is perceptible, lively, often minimalist. The focus is on the actors and their game. The ambience of the theater evenings is characterized by an open and cozy atmosphere: After the evening events there is the possibility of direct exchange with the actors.

Guest performances

The Schnürschuh Theater offers guest artists the opportunity to use the stage for performances. The focus is on cabaret, theater, concerts and cabaret. In addition to nationally known professional tour artists, regional amateur groups also frequently make guest appearances.
