The Concordia Theater Bremen was a small theater on Schwachhauser Heerstrasse in Bremen . The simple spatial stage had no complex technology until the end and had 120 seats. In 2016 the building, which had not been used since 2012, was demolished.

history

The beginnings of the Concordia as a cultural institution in Bremen go back to the middle of the 19th century. From 1851, garden concerts with sacred music were held regularly every Sunday morning in the former railway pavilion. In 1880 the building was converted into a pub and given the name Concordia ( Latin for 'harmony'). This restoration lasted with interruptions under different operators until 2016. After the end of the Second World War, a cinema with an attached restaurant was located in the Concordia for a few years. After this moved out, the house stood empty for several years.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Kurt Hübner , the then director of the Bremen Theater , discovered the vacant building and had it rebuilt. From January 26, 1971, the Concordia was the studio stage of the Bremen City Theater and served as the home stage of the Bremen Dance Theater . Many well-known directors worked in this theater, among them Rainer Werner Fassbinder . In 1975 the artistic director Peter Stoltzenberg hired the Hungarian writer and director George Tabori and gave him the opportunity to set up his theater laboratory with an ensemble of ten actors in the Concordia . Tabori's first piece at Concordia was a talk show , followed by Ein Hungerkünstler , Siegmunds Freude and Hamlet . His staging of the hunger artist caused a minor scandal because he had the actors fast for 40 days under the supervision of a doctor in a self-experiment. The then Bremen Senator for Culture Horst Werner Franke threatened to force-feed the actors and arrest the director, which meant that the contracts with most of the employees were not extended. Tabori's time at Concordia ended when the director changed in 1978.

In the 2007/08 season the Theater Bremen parted from the Concordia for financial reasons and for a few months it was uncertain whether the house had a future. A restaurant was rented in the rooms of the theater for a short time, but it could not compete with the restaurant in the front part of the Schwachhauser Heerstrasse. Finally, the Bremen theater laboratory and the Bremen shakespeare company agreed on a cooperation. In addition to theater and dance, music and literature readings should also be held.

In the 2012 season, the bremer shakespeare company temporarily moved from rooms in Neustadt to the Concordia . The building then stood empty until it was demolished on September 5, 2016. A building with 60 student apartments has been erected in its place.
