Koen Schoots

Koen Schoots (* 1960 in Veghel ) is a Dutch conductor who lives and works in Austria.

After completing school at the Episcopal College SGM in Weert , Schoots studied opera conducting, piano and singing at the Maastricht Conservatory . He lives in Gablitz near Vienna and works in the entire German-speaking area as well as in the USA. His repertoire mainly includes musicals, operas and operettas. Schoots worked as a conductor at various opera theaters in Austria ( Linz and Klagenfurt ) and Germany ( Deutsche Oper am Rhein , Darmstadt , Wiesbaden and Gelsenkirchen ). In 1992 he directed the German production of the musical Cats in Hamburg. In 1999 he opened the musical theater in Bremen with the German premiere of the musical Jekyll & Hyde by Frank Wildhorn .

Since 2004 he has been a permanent guest conductor at the Komische Oper Berlin and the Theater St. Gallen . From 2004 to 2010 he conducted the St. Margarethen Opera Festival , from 2009 as chief conductor. In 2006 he made his US debut with the musical The Seduction of Sheila Valentine in New Jersey with Linda Eder in the lead role. In 2009 he conducted the world premiere of the Wildhorn musical Der Graf von Monte Christo at the St. Gallen Theater . From 2010 to 2017 he was music director at the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien.

Schoots was married to the Austrian musical singer Susanne Dengler and has two children from this marriage. He is currently married to the American singer Colleen Besett. He has three children in total.
