The Opera in the St. Margarethen Quarry (until 2014 St. Margarethen Opera Festival ) is an annual open-air opera festival in the Roman quarry in Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland ( Austria ).

history

The opera in the St. Margarethen quarry was founded at the suggestion of Marcel Prawy under the name of the St. Margarethen Opera Festival. From the very beginning, the Opera Festival had the intention of offering so-called “true to work” productions and took place for the first time in 1996. Since then there have been opera performances and concerts with classical and pop music every year in the summer months of July and August on the open-air natural stage . From 2001 onwards, a children's opera was staged every year in the “Papagenos Opernwelt” quarry in St. Margarethen as part of the opera festival . The stage was in the disused part of the Roman quarry . The founder and director of the festival was the Austrian Wolfgang Werner until mid-2014 .

In 2014 the opera festival had to file for bankruptcy. As a result, Wolfgang Werner resigned. The performances of the 2014 season were played according to plan. However, the owner of the Roman quarry, the Esterházy Foundation , aimed to continue the opera festival. The game operations for 2014 were taken over by the newly founded Arenaria GmbH .

In August 2017, the production of the troubadour planned for 2018 was canceled due to the lack of support from the state of Burgenland .

In 2019 Daniel Serafin was appointed artistic director of the opera in the St. Margarethen quarry.

In 2020 the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Opera performances

Every summer, well-known operas are performed on the large stage of the Roman quarry in St. Margarethen. Both the stage design, which seeks to integrate into the natural backdrop, and the musical performances attract around 160,000 visitors annually. There is space for 4,670 people per event on the open-air stage.

In 2016, The Love Potion was played on the smaller Ruffini stage - named after the head of Prince Esterházy's quarry, Romulo Ruffini - for around 2,200 visitors, as the Passion Play, which is held every five years, took place on the big stage.

Children's opera

In “Papagenos Opernwelt”, a specially created area in a side quarry, fairy tale operas for children aged 6 and over have been performed for years. Well-known melodies and stories are staged for the opera audience of tomorrow. In 2015 and 2016 the children's opera was performed in the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt.

roman quarry exclusive

As part of the “römersteinbruch exclusive” series, the St. Margarethen Opera Festival presented concerts in the areas of classical , pop and jazz . Personalities such as Jessye Norman , Montserrat Caballé , Elīna Garanča , Udo Jürgens , Paolo Conte , Christina Stürmer , Leonard Cohen and Norah Jones have already been guests here.

Festival site

The festival area in the Roman quarry St. Margarethen was the largest natural stage in Europe.

In 2007 and 2008, the natural space on the festival site was rebuilt and redesigned, taking into account the special nature of the rocky backdrop. At the same time, the necessary infrastructural conditions were created.
