The Count of Monte Christo is a musical by Frank Wildhorn (melodies), Koen Schoots (arrangements), Kim Scharnberg (orchestration) and Jack Murphy (lyrics). It is based on the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas and was premiered in German on March 14, 2009 in Switzerland at the Theater St. Gallen under the direction of Andreas Gergen .
The plot is based on the novel, whereby the plot of the extensive novel is very much shortened. The playing time is about two and a half hours.
The CD with the original English songs, released at the end of 2008, reached number one in Germany and number four in Great Britain even before its premiere. In 2010 the piece was shown in Korean translation in Seoul . In Germany, the piece was first performed in 2012 at the Musical Comedy Leipzig (Leipzig Opera). In 2013 the piece was performed at the Freilichtspiele Tecklenburg , and in 2014 at the Frankenfestspiele in Röttingen .
