action
During the journey home of King Richard the Lionheart from the 3rd Crusade, he is captured by Duke Leopold in Austria and handed over to Heinrich IV . Robin von Locksley is supposed to deliver the ransom demand of 100,000 silver marks. So he returned to his homeland in 1194. Meanwhile, England is ruled by Prince John , Richard's brother, with the help of his power-hungry wife Isabelle , the Bishop of Herford and the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Robin of Locksley arrives at Nottingham Castle during a party to deliver the ransom demands. It comes to a head when he takes sides for the poor and starving of the people. Robin is outlawed by the court, but he may as outlaw with Jess in the Sherwood Forest flee. Here they meet Little John and his companions. Robin and John face each other in a stick fight, which Robin wins. Jess reports what happened to the outcasts, and Robin explains that they must rescue King Richard the Lionheart by raising the ransom for him. So they help him with organized raids according to the motto "Take the rich and give to the poor." During one of these raids they meet Lady Marian, her maid Amelia and the monk Brother Tuck. Love develops between Marian and Robin, but Robin's jealousy soon shakes her. While Brother Tuck stays with the men from Sherwood Forest, Marian and Amelia move back to Nottingham .
In the meantime, Lady Isabelle and the Bishop of Herford forge a plan to destroy Robin Hood, as he now calls himself. The sheriff's men then raided Locksley Castle and set it on fire. When Robin sees the wounded women moving into the robber camp, he realizes that he has to do something and, despite Brother Tuck's objections, moves with his men to Locksley Castle, where the sheriff's men are waiting for them. During the fight, young Jess, who was previously discovered to be the daughter of Lady Isabelle and the sheriff, dies while going to meet the sheriff to save Robin. Robin is captured. While Robin's men have withdrawn to Sherwood Forest, Robin loses courage in the dungeon at Nottingham Castle. Marian, however, continues to stand by him and confesses her love to him, but is later surprised by Lady Isabelle. Through a trick she gets her husband, Prince John, to marry Marian with the sheriff. Marian agrees because Prince John promises to pardon Robin and the robbers.
Robin may be released in the meantime, and returns to the robber camp where Friar Tuck's men ascribes new courage . They find support in destroying Nottingham in Amelia, who tells of the Marian's trade with Nottingham. The final battle between Robin and Nottingham ensues. Nottingham is defeated, but Robin gives him his life so that he does not have to marry in sin. During the wedding, the rescued king appears and leads his cousin Marian to the altar.
