Sentencing and rehabilitation
In 1986 Günther Kaufmann married a 16 years younger woman and settled in the Algarve . Six years later, his wife got cancer . The treatment costs consumed the savings, and films were rarely offered during this time. His wife cheated on Kaufmann's tax advisor Hartmut Hagen for 830,000 German marks by promising him a share of the profits from an invented damages lawsuit against a real estate investor. Hagen was supposed to fund the alleged process, but later became suspicious. What role Günther Kaufmann played in this remained unclear. Hagen was killed on February 1, 2001 in a robbery in his office in Munich-Großhadern. Kaufmann's wife died in May 2002.
On November 27, 2002, Kaufmann was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for a false confession of attempted aggravated extortion resulting in death. With the confession he wanted to protect his sick wife, who had instigated three men to do the crime. After the real perpetrators were convicted, Kaufmann was released. He retracted his confession and obtained a retrial . On January 26, 2005, he was acquitted by the 8th criminal division of the Augsburg Regional Court . On March 27, 2006, however, he was sentenced to probation and a fine for deprivation of liberty in a particularly serious case, since two alleged accomplices had been in custody for three weeks because of his false testimony.
In 2004 Günther Kaufmann published his autobiography The White Negro from Hasenbergl in collaboration with Gabriele Droste , in which he primarily dealt with the events of recent years.
