action

The Vikings around Chief Halvar are on a raid again. When they see a group of sleeping knights and three horse-drawn wagons below a slope, Halvar's son Wickie is supposed to prove himself and steal from the knights. While trying to steal the keys to a locked car from one of the sleeping people, a strange girl suddenly comes before him. The knights wake up and discover Wickie, whereupon the other Vikings intervene and a fight ensues. In the midst of the fighting, one of the knights manages to grab Vicky and lock him in a barred wagon with a group of enslaved Inuit. The strange girl frightens the horse that is harnessed to the wagon with the prisoners, whereupon it passes. Wickie manages to stop the car and free the Inuit and herself. The Inuit thank him and flee from the scene. Wickie discovers a book that the Inuit have left behind. The other Vikings have now realized that there is nothing more to get from the knights, as they had already been robbed by the terrible Sven. Halvar reprimands his son for not having noticed Wickie's brief imprisonment and believes that he has moved away from the scene of the fight out of fear.

In the village of Flake, the village women are disappointed by their Viking men returning home with little booty. However, the strange girl appears again, who had secretly sneaked aboard the dragon ship. Halvar, however, ties and enslaved her. Wickie takes a closer look at the book and notices that it points the way to the “treasure of the gods”, more precisely to the “hammer of Thor”, a powerful weapon that hurls lightning. As luck would have it, an amulet is required for this, which Halvar carries with him and which he inherited from his forefathers. The Vikings celebrate a festival and Halvar announces that he wants to look for the treasure. But all the villagers fall asleep moments later, because someone has put a sleeping pill on their drink. When they wake up, Halvar is gone. A dispute began between the villagers about who should represent Chief Halvar. The old, wise Viking Urobe says that, according to old Viking tradition, the chief son, Vicky, has to do this. After some initial skepticism and certain problems, which can be traced back to Wickie's lack of nautical experience, the Vikings are at sea with their ships to free Halvar from the castle of the terrible Sven. Your ship gets caught in a severe storm and threatens to capsize. The slave lets Wickie cut her bonds and climbs on the mast to cut the sail. The Viking Snorre is lost in the storm. The others find him on the island of the Valkyries, but are almost thrown from a cliff into the sea.

Wickie mentions the treasure just in time and that the terrible Sven also wants to find him, whereupon they are released to thwart Sven's plans. At the "Cape of Fear" they sneak into Svens Castle disguised as jugglers. You find the dungeon with Halvar, who has since been robbed of his amulet by Sven. But unexpectedly the girl closes the dungeon door behind them and the crew is trapped. The terrible Sven appears and praises the girl, who for the others turns out to be Svenja, Sven's daughter. However, Wickie manages to leave the dungeon by means of a robber's ladder. The attempt to free the other Vikings with the help of a donkey fails. So Vicky sneaks into the terrible Sven's bedroom and steals the keys to the dungeon from him, who is already asleep. The Vikings escape, but Sven has noticed they are fleeing and takes one of his ships in pursuit. The Vikings see no other way out than to drive straight into the dreaded Odin Gorge. There she pushes Sven with his ship into a vortex. After a turbulent journey through a cave system, the Vikings arrive in Greenland. However, they are not prepared for the cold there. Fortunately for them, the Inuit come to their aid, who also know the way to the “Palace of Eternal Ice”, where the treasure is said to be. But the terrible Sven and his people are there before them and discover Halvar and his team.

Sven forces Wickie to solve the mystery of the hidden treasure and to find out how to avoid the danger of huge, falling icicles. Wickie saves Svenja from falling into the abyss. When they finally find the treasure, the legendary "Thor's Hammer", Sven succeeds in snatching it. In his hasty greed, however, he falls into a hole and can barely hold on to its edge. He asks his daughter to quickly grab the hammer and use it to defeat Halvar and Wickie. However, she does not obey him and instead throws the hammer into the abyss, where he can no longer harm any of the opponents. Halvar pulls Sven out of the hole and swaps him and Sven's crew, tied up, with the Inuit for goods such as skins that are urgently needed in their village Flake. Wickie and Svenja make up. However, Svenja refuses Wickie's offer to come to Flake, as her father needs her intelligence just like Wickie's father needs his.

Reviews

All critics unanimously stated that the children in the audience would have had a lot of fun watching the film (e.g. through the formulation: "'Wickie on a long journey' seems to meet the taste of the intended target group."). It is also praised that the filmmakers had skillfully used the 3D technology, although this technology was first tested in Germany on real actors in the film: "The three-dimensional highlight is [...] Snorre's tooth-pulling action using arrow and string: when the rotten tooth of the gnarled Vikings draws its trajectory through the audience. "

Is rated negatively especially that screenwriter Christian Ditter its submission, the four-part Indiana Jones series , was copied directly, which for many, especially among cineastes in the adult audience discomfort have triggered.

production

occupation

After Michael Herbig had directed the first real film adaptation, Wickie and the Strong Men , Christian Ditter took over the direction of Wickie's long journey . The cast of the "strong men" for the first film ( Wickie and the strong men ) was determined in the casting show Bully sucht die strong men . The same cast was used for the sequel. She was joined by a new girlfriend for Wickie, who was wanted in a public casting in July 2010.

Filming

The original Viking ship "Freya" from the shooting is now lying on the Chiemsee in Bavaria .

The film was shot in the Bavaria Filmstudios (Germany), in Denmark, England and Malta, among others.

The film set village "Flake" was rebuilt for the shooting in the summer of 2010 in Sachsenbach . Then it was brought back to Walchensee, where it can be visited as an excursion destination, just like after shooting the first part.

3D technology

A 3D rig was specially developed for the film by the Munich company Stereotec, on which two ARRI Alexa cameras with zooms could be mounted and which can be completely remote controlled. This saved time when shooting in 3D. A stereographer ( Florian Maier ) joined the team.

success

The film saw 1,737,818 viewers in Germany in 2011. The production costs were over 12 million euros. Although the film did not see nearly as many viewers in the cinema as the previous film (which had over 5 million cinema-goers), it is considered an economic success.

Theme song

The well-known song Hey, Hey, Wickie was created exclusively for the film by the German pop musician Nena feat. K-rings reissued.

continuation

For 2012 the production of a third part under the title Wickie and the big competition was originally planned, but this was not implemented.
