The friendship book (Freundebuch) is a modern form of the poetry album . This is a firmly bound book in which you can answer simple questions about yourself.

Emergence

The ancestor of today's friendship book is the album amicorum or Stammbuch . It spread from the 16th century and was widely used by the bourgeoisie and students in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Content of friendship books

In poetry albums, it is more likely that poems are written down for friends, while friendship books are used to write down personal entries on the preferences of the person making the entries. Usually there is also space for a photo. Contents of a friendship book entry can be:

  • Surname
  • Nickname
  • contact details
  • Hobbies
  • where have we met
  • What can you do best
  • I like / don't like that
