The Rosengarten (official name: m: con Congress Center Rosengarten) is a congress and conference center in Mannheim city center.

history

Shortly before completion in 1902

The building was built from 1900 to 1903 by the company Joseph Hoffmann & Söhne as a city festival hall in Art Nouveau style , based on a design by the architect Bruno Schmitz . The Nibelungensaal was one of the largest halls in Germany with a capacity of 6,000. In 1904, Wendelin Weißheimer wrote enthusiastically about his "huge success" in the "giant building". In his book “The Art of Speech” published in 1914, Friedrich Naumann stated that it was “refreshing” to speak in “Germany's largest hall”. The rose garden is located on the north side of the Art Nouveau complex at Friedrichsplatz across from Mannheim's landmark, the water tower . With its characteristic roof made of green glazed clay tiles, the rose garden shapes the cityscape as an important sight. The rose garden was badly damaged during the Second World War. The historical front building with the Musensaal was restored on the outside. In place of the Nibelungen Hall, which had not been rebuilt, a modern new building was built behind the old building in 1974 according to the plans of the Mannheim architect Karl Schmucker , in which the Mozart Hall is located, the largest hall since then. In 2006/07 the building was expanded considerably according to the plans of Andreas Schmucker , son of Karl Schmucker. The back of the 1974 part of the building was rebuilt so that the total area almost doubled.

Events such as the annual general meeting of the German Association of Cities , shareholders' general meetings of companies such as BASF , party conferences and large medical congresses such as the annual conference of the German Cardiac Society have contributed to making the m: con Congress Center Rosengarten one of the most successful congress centers in Germany. According to a ranking by the trade journal “HV Magazin” (as of 2016), it is the leading conference center for general meetings in Baden-Württemberg. Medical and scientific congresses also take place in large numbers, for example the “Neurowoche”, organized by the German Society for Neurology. In addition to congresses and general meetings, concerts, charity and gala evenings take place in the Mannheim Rosengarten. The Mozart Hall in the Rosengarten is the venue for the traditional National Theater Orchestra of the Mannheim Music Academy. The various ensembles of the SWR also organize their own series of concerts there. The Mozart Hall is also used as a venue for the world's great symphony orchestras. The State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate , on the other hand, mainly performs its Mannheim concert series in the Musensaal.

Space

The Mozart Hall offers space for up to 2,300 people. The Musensaal in the historic old building can accommodate up to 1,360 visitors, the Stamitzsaal next to it around 250 people. The Holzbauersaal in the underground Vario Hall can be divided as required and can accommodate up to 900 people. Essentially, the extension created a glass cube according to the plans of the Mannheim architect Andreas Schmucker. It includes two new side foyers, ten additional seminar rooms, an auditorium for 500 participants, four multifunctional rooms and twelve new conference rooms. For this purpose, one floor was added to the foyer around the Mozart Hall, which was built in 1974. Nothing was added to the Mozart Hall itself. The total height of the building is now 23 meters. On both sides, the building increased by 15 meters in width over a length of 65 meters. Since the expansion, the m: con Congress Center Rosengarten has offered a total of 44 rooms with a total area of around 22,000 square meters. Up to 9,000 participants per congress can meet in the m: con Congress Center Rosengarten. Escalators were integrated into the building so that they could easily be brought into their meeting and work shop rooms. m: con invested a total of 53 million euros in the construction project. Of the total investment, 40 million euros went into the pure construction project, ten million euros were invested in the technical equipment.
