RTL donation marathon
The RTL Spendenmarathon has been an annual fundraising campaign run by the private television broadcaster RTL since 1996 .
History and description
The RTL donation marathon has been held annually since November 26, 1996. It is the longest charity program on German television, with a duration of more than 24 hours. In the 20th anniversary year 2015, the donation marathon was held for the first time over a period of more than 30 hours. The show has been moderated by Wolfram Kons , who is also RTL's general director for charity , since it started . In recent years, the donation show and other campaigns raised a total of more than 170 million euros (as of November 2018). All proceeds go to the non-profit foundation “RTL Foundation - We Help Children eV”. For the time of the RTL donation marathon, RTL is changing its entire program for one day. Around the clock, the donation studio is switched once an hour so that the selected children's aid projects for which funds are collected can be presented. Wolfram Kons also welcomes prominent volunteer project sponsors live in the studio and the interim status of the fundraising campaign is presented.
The entire broadcast is transmitted from a special studio with an attached call center , in which the donors can call and also take part in the auctions running at the same time . To support these auctions, celebrities are invited annually to hand over personal items so that they can be auctioned. The proceeds from the auctions also go to the foundation. The auctions have been handled via the United Charity charity auction platform since 2016 .
Since the year 2000, a special program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? - Celebrity special is broadcast, in which only celebrities play and donate their winnings to the “RTL - We help children” foundation.
Partners and sponsors
The RTL donation marathon is supported by sponsors such as Ford (2002–2007), Volkswagen (2008–2015), Vodafone (has been providing the call center and handling the hotline since 2006 ), Netto Marken-Discount (has been providing the printed children's motif shopping bag since 2014 ), Bofrost (with the sale of the family calendar), Sparda-Bank West eG, Lions Club and many others.
