Poipet ( Khmer ក្រុង ប៉ោយប៉ែត , official transcription: Paôy Pêt ) is a city in the province of Banteay Meanchey in western Cambodia . It lies directly on the border with Thailand and is one of the most important border crossings between the two countries. Aranyaprathet is on the Thai side . National road 5 ends in Poipet .

There are several casinos on an approx. 200 meter wide strip between the actual border and the Cambodian checkpoint . This enables visitors from Thailand, where gambling is prohibited, to play here without having to go through the Cambodian border control .
