The National Highway 5 (NH 5) is one of eight national highways in Cambodia and part of the entire course of the Asian Highway 1 (AH 1) . It runs a distance of 407 kilometers from the capital Phnom Penh in a north-westerly direction to the Thai border.
Street description
The national road begins in Phnom Penh at the Chroy Changva Bridge on the west bank of the Tonle Sap River . The road leads to Udong directly on the bank of the Tonle Sap in a northerly direction. There it leaves the direct bank area and runs parallel to the river to Kampong Chhnang . Then it continues in a north-westerly direction past the south bank of Tonle Sap Lake to Pursat . From there the NH 5 continues northwest to the largest city on the route, Battambang . In Sisophon which opens National Road 6 a. From here to the border town of Poipet , the national trunk road 5 forms part of the most important road connections for tourism in Cambodia, namely the one from Thailand to Siem Reap or Angkor . After the Poipet border crossing, Route 33 joins on the Thai side .

From Pursat, the railway line from Phnom Penh to Poipet runs parallel to National Road 5 .
