Thomas Anders (* March 1, 1963 as Bernd Weendung in Mörz ) is a German pop and hit singer , music producer , songwriter and television presenter . With 125 million records sold as part of the Modern Talking duo , he is one of the most commercially successful German singers.

Youth and career start

Thomas Anders grew up in Mörz, a district of Münstermaifeld . Already in elementary school he showed a keen interest in music, and later he took piano lessons. He got his first engagement after winning a young talent competition from over 100 applicants. At that time he performed over 300 times in the Moselle Dance Palace with children's songs and hits. He attended the Kurfürst-Balduin-Gymnasium and later the Koblenz Eichendorff-Gymnasium .

A record recorded in 1980 with producer Daniel David by the CBS record company was not a great success. In 1981, he was in the television show Would you today 'time for me of Michael Learns an appearance with the produced also by David Title You weep for him . After graduating from high school in 1982, he studied German , journalism and musicology for five semesters at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In the same year he came under contract with Hansa Musik Produktion ; the pop singer GG Anderson produced I don't want your life with him . In 1983, on behalf of Hansa, the Hamburg music publisher Intersong asked him if he wanted to sing Pick up the Phone in a German version. Since the producer was supposed to be Dieter Bohlen , he agreed and took the songs. What does that matter , what are you dreaming of? and end of the line yearning .

Modern talking

It was not until his music producer Dieter Bohlen started an English-language Eurodisco project in the autumn of 1984 and together with him founded the duo Modern Talking that the title You're My Heart, You're My Soul achieved almost overnight success in January 1985 .

The press noticed differently because of its large gold chain with the words "NORA". With this necklace he showed his bond with his then wife Nora Balling, whom he married on July 27, 1985 in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Koblenz. The music journalist Martin Brem described Anders in a column in the specialist journal Musikexpress / Sounds as "the sun-tanned singing fagot and lapdog on the golden chain of his wife Nora". Anders sued the magazine, which was sentenced to a compensation payment of 25,000 DM. Another trademark of Thomas Anders was the remote keyboard (Keytar), which he often presented in appearances and photo shoots.

After the temporary dissolution of Modern Talking towards the end of 1987, Anders briefly withdrew to the United States and produced a song with his wife called Waiting So Long , sung by Man-X; the record did not become a commercial success. In 1994 Anders came back to Koblenz. After the marriage with Nora Balling was divorced in February 1999, he married Claudia Hess in 2000; Their son was born in 2002. In 1993 Anders played the pop star "Ypsilon" in the series Stockholm Marathon of the Kommissar Beck series. The novel was based on Per Wahlöö and Maj Sjöwall . The broadcaster RTL broadcast the German-Swedish co-production in 1995. The title song Marathon of Life from the album When Will I See You Again sang Thomas Anders himself. As a solo artist Anders released several English-language albums. Furthermore, an album sung in Spanish was released in 1994 with Barcos de Cristal . The CD was released in the USA and South America and was number one on the charts in Argentina.

In 1998 Bohlen and Anders got together again and Modern Talking made a comeback. The comeback album Back for Good , which largely consisted of remixed versions of the hits from the 1980s, reached number one in over 18 countries and achieved gold and platinum status. In the following years a new Modern Talking album was released every year, from which two singles were extracted. In addition, the band was on tour regularly. The successes from the 1980s were seamlessly followed up, and in terms of sales they were even exceeded.

In the summer of 2000 Anders was one of the composers of the single Big Brother , sung by Zlatko Trpkovski and Jürgen Milski . The CD achieved platinum status in the German singles hit parade. In 2001 Anders produced the pop-girl duo It-Girls together with Gerd Graf Bernadotte (Dieter Bohlen Management) , with the hit My Heart It Feels Like (Dub Dub…) . Anders also wrote the song Cry for You for the girl band No Angels . At the same time and predominantly, Thomas Anders continued to turn to Modern Talking. On June 7, 2003, Bohlen announced the split from Modern Talking. Bohlen criticized Anders in his book Behind the Scenes . He sued some of the statements and was right; the corresponding passages had to be blackened.

Solo career

Thomas Anders, 2007

In 2004 he released the album This Time and three singles, which, however, could not build on the success of Modern Talking. The first single Independent Girl reached the top 20 in Germany. In Russia, the single rose to number five. In Turkey, Anders reached number two on the charts with his second single, King of Love . Anders also produced the single Just Dream for a Holiday-on-Ice show in the same year . The song reached number 64 in the charts in Germany.

In the spring of 2005, Anders was defeated against Bohlen in court when his claim for damages in the amount of one million euros was rejected because of contentious passages in Bohlen's book. On March 21, 2005, an appeal was lodged against the judgment at the Court of Appeal, which ended on October 28, 2005 through a settlement between the parties for 60,000 euros. Anders donated the sum to various charitable institutions.

In 2003 Stefan Raab took him into the jury of SSDSGPS (Stefan is looking for the Super Grand Prix Star) , a counter-event to Germany is looking for the superstar . Anders moderated the national show for the Eurovision Song Contest and read Germany's points. From March 2004 he became the presenter of the Kabel-eins music show Best of Formula One , and in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup, he presented the music show "Auf nach Berlin" - World Cup Cult Tour .

On March 9, 2006, Anders was one of the three participants in the German qualification for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 . For the following album, Songs Forever , Anders selected some hits from the 1980s and, together with the producers Achim Brochhausen and Peter Ries, with the involvement of the Babelsberg Film Orchestra and the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra, gave these songs a new musical outfit in jazz / swing / lounge style. The record reached number 46 in the German charts. In the same year, on March 20, he was awarded the title of “Honorary Professor of the Kiev National University of Art and Culture” on the grounds that modern talking had shaped the taste in music of an entire generation.

Together with the Berlin-based production team Sound-Chateau, Anders released the two songs Ibiza, Baba Baya and For You as download in July 2008 , now again musically in the pop / house area, followed in November 2008 by the Christmas song Kisses for Christmas . On this song he worked again with his long-time musician friend Achim Brochhausen. In the spring of 2009 a duet with the German pop singer Sandra appeared , which was able to place in the German single charts, and on May 16 of the same year he took over the moderation of the Eurovision Song Contest Countdown from Thomas Hermanns . Together with Aleksandra Bechtel , he hosted the first program of Die neue Hitparade on RTL II on May 16, 2010 .

Also in spring 2010 a new pop / dance album was released in Russia with the title Strong , which rose to # 2 in the Russian charts with over 500,000 records sold. For this, Anders worked with the Russian producer Sergey Revtov. Two videos were made with video clip director Pavel Hoodyiakov for the singles Why Do You Cry and Stay With Me that were extracted from it. Due to its great success in Russia, the album was released in September 2011 and worldwide as a download including five previously unreleased songs. In November 2012, Anders released an English-language Christmas album entitled Christmas For You . In addition to well-known classic American Christmas carols, it contains some personal favorites. For the project, Anders worked again with Brochhausen, who wrote some new songs and was responsible for the arrangement.

In May 2011 Anders gave a collaboration with the songwriter and producer Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen as Duo Anders | Fahrenkrog known. Their first single Gigolo was released on May 27, 2011 and entered the German single charts at number 40. The album Two was released on June 10th and reached number 11 on the German album charts. The second single No More Tears On The Dancefloor did not make it into the top 100.

In 2016 Anders released the album History , which contains new interpretations of previous Modern Talking titles and two newly composed songs.

In April 2017 Anders released his first exclusively German-language album, entitled Pures Leben , which entered the charts at number 14. The singles The Best Day of My Life and Star Rain reached number 1 on the conservative pop radio charts, the third single Das Lied das Leben ist made it to number 2. In the annual charts, it reached positions 5 and 7.
