Melissa Humana-Paredes (born October 10, 1992 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian beach volleyball player and world champion.

Career

Humana-Paredes started playing beach volleyball at the age of twelve. During her studies at York University , she also played indoor volleyball on the York Lions university team , but otherwise stayed playing in the sand. In 2009 she reached 17th place with Victoria Altomare at the U19 World Cup in Alanya . A year later she came ninth with Jennifer Cross in the same competition in Porto . In 2011 she completed her first tournament on the FIVB World Tour with Altomare at the Québec Open . At the U21 World Cup in Halifax, the duo only lost to the Swiss Betschart / Heidrich in the final .

The following year the tournament took place there again and Humana-Paredes came in fifth with her new partner Taylor Pischke . At the U23 World Cup 2013 in Mysłowice , Humana-Paredes / Pischke won the bronze medal. Then they played their first Grand Slam in Long Beach . On the continental tour, they won a tournament in Varadero and came second in Mazatlán . This series was followed by finals in Grand Cayman and Toronto in early 2014, as well as a win in Manzanillo . At the FIVB Open Tournament in Puerto Vallarta , Humana-Paredes / Pischke finished ninth and at the U23 World Cup in Mysłowice they again took third place. They then played four Grand Slams, finishing ninth in Stare Jabłonki and fifth in São Paulo twice in the top ten. At the end of the year they won the NORCECA tournament in Trinidad and Tobago .

On the World Tour 2015 , Humana-Paredes / Pischke achieved further top ten results as fifth in the Fuzhou Open and ninth in the Prague Open and the major tournament in Stavanger . At the World Cup in the Netherlands , they reached the second round in the group, in which they were defeated by the eventual tournament winners Bárbara / Ágatha from Brazil. At the Pan American Games in Toronto, they just missed a medal in fourth. In 2016 there was a fifth place in the FIVB series in Xiamen and ninth place at the Vitória Open, the major tournament in Hamburg and the Grand Slam Olsztyn . At the end of the year Humana-Paredes and Jamie Lynn Broder won the NORCECA tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.

In 2017 she formed a new duo with Olympian Sarah Pavan . At the first joint appearance on the World Tour 2017 in Rio de Janeiro , Humana-Paredes / Pavan reached the final of the four-star tournament, which they lost to Agatha / Duda . They also had to admit defeat to the Brazilians in the bronze game in The Hague . Then they won the five-star tournament in Poreč with a final victory against the Czechs Hermannová / Sluková . This was followed by a third place in Gstaad (five stars) and a second place in Olsztyn (four stars). At the World Cup in Vienna , Humana-Paredes / Pavan reached the semi-finals after six wins without losing a set, in which they lost 2-1 to the Americans Ross / Fendrick . In the game for third place they were also defeated by the Brazilians Larissa / Talita with 1: 2. They also came fourth at the World Tour Final in Hamburg.

On the 2017/18 World Tour , Pavan / Humana-Paredes were initially fifth in Fort Lauderdale . Then they won the tournaments in Xiamen (four stars) and Gstaad (five stars) and achieved further top ten results. At the World Tour Final 2018 they came in seventh place. At the World Tour 2018/19 they reached the finals in Las Vegas and Itapema (four stars each). There were also a fourth and two fifth places. At the 2019 World Cup in Hamburg , the Canadians became world champions with a victory in the final against the Americans Alexandra Klineman and April Ross and thus won the first World Cup medal for their country.

family

Humana-Paredes is the daughter of Chilean emigrants. Her father, Hernán, was a national volleyball player and coached the Canadian beach volleyball duo Child / Heese , which won the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games . Her brother Felipe also plays beach volleyball.
