The company was one of three fixed-line, one long-distance and eight cellular companies in Brazil that emerged from the collapse of the Telebrás' telecommunications monopoly .

The company's shares were traded on the Brazilian Bovespa Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange .

In 2009, 79% of Brasil Telecom was sold to telecommunications company Oi for $ 4.8 billion . Since then, Brasil Telecom has been a subsidiary of the group.
