Sophie van Gestel (born June 20, 1991 in Oostelbeers ) is a Dutch beach volleyball player .

Career

Sophie van Gestel has been playing beach volleyball since 2006. In 2008 she reached the final at the Youth World Cup in The Hague with Rimke Braakman and reached the final of the U21 World Cup in Brighton with Michelle Stiekema . In 2009 she reached fifth place at the Junior World Championships with Madelein Meppelink in Blackpool . From 2008 to 2010 she played a few FIVB tournaments with Danielle Remmers . From 2011 Van Gestel played again with Madelein Meppelink in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . Meppelink / van Gestel started the 2012 season with a seventh place in Brasília and finished ninth in the Grand Slam in Beijing . In second place in the group they reached the knockout round of the European Championship in Scheveningen , where they won the Dutch duel against Sinnema / Wesselink as well as the round of 16 against the Germans Holtwick / Semmler ; in the quarterfinals, the preliminary round match against the Czechs Háječková / Klapalová and Meppelink / van Gestel lost again after three sets. They finished the next Grand Slams in Moscow and Gstaad in fifth and ninth; in Klagenfurt they were only subject to the Russians Ukolowa / Birlowa in the final . They qualified for the Olympic Games in London via the World Cup . There they came through the playoff round of the group third in the round of 16, which they lost against the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana ; thus they finished the Olympic tournament in ninth place. Meppelink also became Dutch champion in 2012.

At the beginning of 2013, Meppelink / van Gestel won the final of the satellite tournament in Antalya against the German Ludwig / Walkenhorst . Two fourth places followed on the 2013 World Tour at the Fuzhou Open and the Grand Slam in Shanghai . Then they won the Grand Slam in Corrientes in the final against Maria Antonelli and Ágatha Bednarczuk , with which they achieved their first tournament victory on the World Tour. They finished ninth in The Hague and fifth in Rome. At the World Cup in Stare Jabłonki they won their preliminary group, but then lost the first knockout game against Ukolowa / Birlowa in the tie-break. At the EM in Klagenfurt they came second in the group to the round of 16 and lost to the Greek Arvaniti / Karagkouni . There was another ninth place at the end of the season in São Paulo . Van Gestel then ended her international career.

In July 2014 van Gestel had her comeback at the side of Sanne Keizer at the Grand Slam in The Hague. In 2015 and 2016 Jantine van der Vlist was her partner. Van Gestel / van der Vlist took part in the 2015 World Cup in their own country and came fourth in the Grand Slam in Olsztyn . In 2016 they won the Continental Cup and were able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where they were eliminated without a win after the preliminary round.

In 2017 van Gestel played again with Madelein Meppelink on the FIVB World Tour and at the World Championships in Vienna . In 2018 van Gestel competed again at the domestic European championship alongside Marloes Wesselink .
