Louise Bawden (born August 7, 1981 in Melbourne ) is an Australian volleyball and beach volleyball player . She took part in both disciplines in the Olympic Games.

Career

Bawden started playing indoor volleyball at the age of 16. From 1998 to 2004 she played for the Australian national team . With the team she took part in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . The hosts only won the game against Kenya and were eliminated after the group stage. The setter then played for three years for the Dutch first division club AMVJ Amstelveen . In 2002 she took part with the national team at the World Cup in Germany , where Australia was eliminated as bottom group after the preliminary round. After the Australian volleyball players failed to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games , Bawden ended her sporting career in 2005 for the time being. She studied journalism at Griffith University in Gold Coast and worked in the field.

When she attended the 2008 Beijing Olympics , she decided to return to sports. In the following year she formed a beach volleyball duo with Alice Rohkamper and played her first tournament on the FIVB World Tour at the Shanghai Open . Bawden / Rohkamper played two more open tournaments and two Grand Slams without reaching any of the top positions. At the Grand Slam in Marseille , Bawden played for the first time with Becchara Palmer . A little later, Bawden / Palmer came to the final of the Open tournament in Stare Jabłonki , which they lost to the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana . They finished fifth at the Kristiansand Open. She received an award from the FIVB as " Rookie of the Year ". On the World Tour 2010 , two ninth places at the Marseille Open and the Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki were her best results.

They achieved the same result at the beginning of the 2011 season at the Open tournaments in Brasília and Shanghai. At the World Cup in Rome they came into the knockout phase as group winners without losing a set. After a win in the first main round against the Chinese duo Huang / Yue, they were defeated by Czech Klapalová / Háječková in three sets in the second round and finished in ninth place. At the end of the year, after finishing fourth at the Phuket Open, they were fifth of the continental AVC championship. On the World Tour 2012 , Bawden / Palmer achieved fifth places in Sanya and Moscow and ninth places in Brasília, Beijing , Rome and Klagenfurt . They qualified for the Olympic Games in London via the Olympic rankings . There they were eliminated as the last group without a win after the preliminary round. Then the duo separated and Bawden still played the Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki with Tamsin Barnett Hinchley .

Since 2013, Bawden played with Taliqua Clancy . Bawden / Clancy dominated the national and continental tour with various tournament victories. On the World Tour 2013 they came in ninth in the Grand Slams in Corrientes and Rome in the top ten. At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki , Bawden / Clancy reached the first main round as second in the group, in which they were eliminated against the Spanish Liliana / Baquerizo . After the World Cup they finished ninth in Gstaad and fifth in Moscow . In 2014 they were initially successful again on a national level. In June they won the Asian Championship in China. On the 2014 World Tour , they finished ninth in Shanghai, Moscow and The Hague and fifth in Berlin and Long Beach . They started the 2015 season with a fifth place in Fuzhou and a ninth place in Moscow. Third in the Poreč Major, they won their first medal at an FIVB tournament and in Stavanger they were fifth again. At the World Cup in the Netherlands , they got into the knockout phase as second in the group and won there against the Swiss Forrer / Vergé-Dépré and the Dutch Meppelink / van Iersel , before they had to admit defeat to the Brazilian duo Lima / Fernanda in the quarter-finals WM finished in fifth place. In the subsequent tournaments in Gstaad, Yokohama and Long Beach they finished fifth, nine and four. In October they were again Asian champions in Hong Kong .

On the World Tour 2016 , Bawden / Clancy came fourth in Vitória , ninth in Moscow and fifth in Hamburg . They achieved ninth places in Gstaad and Klagenfurt. As the fifth best team in the Olympic rankings, they qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio . There they won all preliminary round matches and the round of 16 against Poles Kołosińska / Brzostek . In the quarterfinals they had to admit defeat to the US duo Walsh / Ross and thus took fifth place. In April 2017, Bawden / Clancy became Asian champions for the third time. After several fifth and ninth places on the World Tour and a 17th place at the World Cup in Vienna , the two parted ways.

After a few tournaments with Jessyka Ngauamo at the end of 2017 , Bawden ended her career.
