Marleen van Iersel (born January 7, 1988 in Breda ) is a Dutch beach volleyball and former volleyball player . She won numerous titles in her youth. In 2012 and 2014 she became European champion. She finished ninth at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

Career

Indoor volleyball

At the age of seven, Marleen van Iersel began playing volleyball indoors at VC Goirle in her home town . She then played for various clubs. Her last station was the first division club VC Weert . There she ended her indoor career in 2006 and finally switched to beach volleyball.

2003 to 2008

In 2003 van Iersel and Leonie Penninga, the two German couples Köhler / Ludwig and Büttner / Sude, finished third at the U18 European Championships in Brno . Then she reached fifth place with Jennifer Waninge at the U19 World Cup in Pattaya . At the same competition she came fourth a year later with Margo Wiltens in Termoli . She succeeded in doing this with Arjanne Stevens at the 2004 U21 World Cup in Porto Santo . In addition, van Iersel was 2004 Dutch champion in the age groups U18 and U20. With her new partner Marloes Wesselink , van Iersel played her first tournament on the FIVB World Tour at the Gstaad Open 2005 . In Tel Aviv van Iersel / Wesselink won the U20 European Championship with a final victory against the Austrians Jirak / Schwaiger . They finished fifth at the U19 World Cup in Saint-Quay-Portrieux and ninth at the U21 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro . At the U18 European Championships in Illitschiwsk van Iersel competed with Angelique Vergeer and came in fourth. In 2006 van Iersel / Wesselink played three open tournaments and finished third in the U21 World Cup in Mysłowice . At the U19 World Cup in Bermuda, van Iersel and Daniëlle Remmers only lost to Rohkamper / Palmer in the final .

In 2007 van Iersel / Wesselink won the satellite tournament in San Sebastián and came third at the Challenger tournament in Cyprus . On the World Tour they played a few open tournaments and also their first Grand Slams in Berlin and Klagenfurt . With a win against Sanne Keizer and Mered de Vries they became Dutch champions. Then they were defeated in the second main round of the EM in Valencia to the German duo Pohl / Okka Rau ; on the losing side, they made it to the fourth round, in which they were eliminated by the Norwegians Håkedal / Tørlen , placing them in seventh place. In Scheveningen van Iersel and Danielle Remmers won the U20 European championship against the Czechs Kolocová / Sluková . In addition, van Iersel / Wesselink came third at the U21 World Cup in Modena . In 2008 they did not get any top placements in the open tournaments and grand slams. At the European Championships in Hamburg they won the Dutch duel against Kadijk / Mooren and were ultimately defeated by two German duos: in the main round Goller / Ludwig and in the losing round Pohl / Rau. Then they finished ninth at the Grand Slams in Gstaad and Klagenfurt as well as the Kristiansand Open. With Remmers van Iersel won the U21 World Cup in Brighton .

2009 to 2013

At the last tournament in Dubai in 2008 and at the World Tour kick-off in Brasília in 2009 , van Iersel had her first appearances at the side of Sanne Keizer and finished ninth in each case. At the Osaka Open, Keizer / van Iersel prevailed in the game for third place against the US duo Akers / Turner and thus won their first medal on the World Tour. They finished ninth in Seoul and at the Masters in Berlin . At the World Championships in Stavanger they reached the knockout round as group winners; in the quarterfinals they were eliminated by the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana and came fifth. On the World Tour, they achieved further top ten results as fourth in Gstaad, fifth in Klagenfurt, seventh in Åland and The Hague and ninth in Barcelona . With a final victory against Remmers / Stiekema , they won the Dutch championship. At the European Championships in Sochi , they came second in the group to the quarter-finals, which they lost to the Belgians Mouha / Van Breedam . They also came in fifth at the last open tournament of the year in Phuket . At the end of the season van Iersel was named “Most Improved Player” by the FIVB .

On the World Tour 2010 , Keizer / van Iersel reached the top ten after two 17th places in the following Grand Slams; they finished ninth in Rome, Moscow and Gstaad and fifth in Stavanger. They finished the Marseille Open in fourth place after two defeats against Austrian duos. At the EM in Berlin they stayed in the preliminary round and in the round of 16 without losing a set. After a tie-break victory in the quarter-finals against the German Köhler / Sude , they lost both the semi-final against Goller / Ludwig and the game for third place against the Finnish sisters Emilia and Erika Nyström . With a win against Meppelink / Wesselink they won the Dutch championship. After finishing fourth at The Hague Open, they won the Continental Cup in Montpellier . They finished the international year with a ninth place in Sanya and a fourth place in Phuket.

In the 2011 season started Keizer / Van Iersel with two ninth places in Brasília and Sanya. Then they won the final of the Shanghai Open against the reigning world champions Kessy / Ross from the USA and thus celebrated their first tournament victory in the FIVB series. The next gold medal came at the very next open tournament in Mysłowice , where the Dutch defeated the Italian duo Cicolari / Menegatti in the final. At the World Cup in Rome , they stayed in the preliminary round and in the first knockout game against their compatriots Kadijk / Mooren without losing a set. In the round of 16 they had to admit defeat to Köhler / Sude. In the following Grand Slams they stayed in the top ten and finished fourth in Stavanger, fifth in Gstaad and third in Klagenfurt, where they defeated the Brazilians Talita / Antonelli in the bronze game after losing to the Olympic champions Walsh / May-Treanor . At the European Championships in Kristiansand they won their preliminary group and the round of 16 against the Norwegians Maaseide / Tørlen , before they had to admit defeat to the Austrians Hansel / Montagnolli in the round of 16 .

At the beginning of the 2012 World Tour , Keizer / van Iersel finished seventh at the Brasília Open, fourth at the Grand Slam in Shanghai and third in Beijing with a win against the German Holtwick / Semmler . At the European Championships in Scheveningen they came into the second round as group winners and defeated Dubovcová / Nestarcová , Mouha / Gielen and Háječková / Klapalová . In the final against the Greek Tsiartsiani / Arvaniti they finally became European champions. After a fifth place in Moscow and a 17th place in Rome, they reached the final at the Grand Slam in Gstaad, which they lost to Walsh / May-Treanor. In Klagenfurt they were again fifth. As the seventh best team in the Olympic rankings, they qualified for the Olympic Games in London . There they came third in the group of sixteen and had to admit defeat to Walsh / May-Treanor again, which put them in ninth place. On the 2013 World Tour , they finished ninth in Fuzhou , Shanghai and Rome, ninth and fifth in The Hague. At the World Cup in Stare Jabłonki they reached the second round as third in the preliminary group, in which they were eliminated against the Brazilians Maestrini / Seixas and finished ninth. They also came ninth in the Grand Slam in Gstaad. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt they came as group winners directly into the round of 16, which they lost in the Dutch duel against van der Vlist / Wesselink . At the Dutch championship they won the title in the final against van der Vlist and Rimke Braakman .

Since 2014

Since the beginning of 2014 van Iersel has played with Madelein Meppelink . At the beginning of the 2014 World Tour , Meppelink / van Iersel finished ninth in Fuzhou and fifth in Shanghai, and they also finished fourth at the CEV Masters in Baden . At the European Championships in Quartu Sant'Elena they won their preliminary group as well as the second round against Holtwick / Semmler and the quarter-finals against Menegatti / Orsi Toth , before they prevailed in the semifinals after three sets against Bieneck / Großner . With a final victory against the Swiss Goricanec / Hüberli , they finally became European champions. They also remained successful on the World Tour as third in Moscow , ninth in Berlin and fourth in Stavanger . After two weaker results, two fifth and one ninth place followed, and finally a third place in São Paulo.

At the first tournaments of the World Tour 2015 , Meppelink / van Iersel were in the final twice; in Lucerne they were defeated by the German duo Borger / Büthe and in Moscow by the Brazilians Larissa / Talita . They finished third at the major tournament in Stavanger. At the World Cup in the Netherlands , they remained unbeaten in the preliminary round and the first knockout game before they lost the round of 16 against the Australians Bawden / Clancy . They finished the Grand Slam in Yokohama in fifth place. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt , the defending champions had to admit defeat to the Slovak duo Dubovcová / Nestarcová as group winners in the round of 16 . They reached their next final at the Grand Slam in Olsztyn , where Larissa / Talita were again too strong. Then Meppelink / van Iersel finished third in Rio de Janeiro and fifth at the World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale . At the start of 2016 , they missed winning the tournament in Maceió by losing to the Brazilians Eduarda Lisboa and Elize Maia . They then finished fifth in Fortaleza and ninth in Rio and Moscow. At the EM in Biel / Bienne they won their preliminary round matches and the Dutch round of 16 against van Gestel / van der Vlist and were eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Czechs Sluková / Hermannová . At the Hamburg Major and the Grand Slam in Olsztyn they also came in fifth and in Gstaad they came fourth. Meppelink / van Iersel qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio as the fourth best team in the Olympic rankings . There they reached the second round in the group, which they lost in the tiebreak against the Swiss Heidrich / Zumkehr . Thus, they finished ninth.

In 2017 van Iersel played alongside the former indoor national player Manon Nummerdor-Flier and since 2018 with Joy Stubbe .
