California State Route 55 begins in the coastal town of Newport Beach near the junction with California State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway). The southern section follows Newport Boulevard to its intersection with 17th Street in Costa Mesa . The street crosses an industrial park until 19th Street. There the CA 55 widens to a total of eight lanes and becomes the intersection-free Costa Mesa Freeway . On the rest of the route to the northern end point, the road is partly elevated or in incisions.

The CA 55 is a busy freeway that connects the northern coastal region of Orange County with Interstate 405 , Interstate 5 and California State Route 91 , among others . While the I-405 opens up the western part of the Greater Los Angeles Area , the I-5 is the most important north-south thoroughfare in the state of California. The CA 91, on the other hand, establishes the connection to the so-called Inland Empire region.

The connection is often overloaded due to the large number of commuters. An average of around 282,000 cars and around 16,000 trucks use the expressway every day.

history

The road was originally built in 1931 and named State Route 43. It led beyond the current course to Riverside . In 1951, the road was redrawn as California State Route 55 and trimmed to its current length. The entire route was called the Newport Freeway until 1976 , but was then renamed the Costa Mesa Freeway .

The California State Route 55 was in 1985 the first freeway in Orange County , the HOV lanes received. Another section of HOV lanes between Fair Drive and 19th Street opened in 1990. In April 2007, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) commissioned a study to widen the route to 17th Street.
